history

Map of Vienna Central Station

Since the beginning of the railway system, the metropolis of Vienna has been linked by several terminal stations that were poorly connected to one another. Since the late 19th century, there have been efforts to remedy this deficiency by building a centrally located through station. But the numerous plans were always discarded by the turmoil of the two world wars as well as the interwar period and the early post-war period. There were plans for a main train station, among other things:

  • In the Nordbahnhof / Praterstern area (1930s and 1940s)
  • A large recreational area was built on the newly planned Danube Island in the Reichsbrücke area (1960s and 1970s)
  • In the Südtiroler Platz area (since the 1950s)

The logical location of a main train station in the Südtiroler Platz area had been shortlisted for over 60 years, but was still not realized. The first big chance was missed as early as 1950 when the two war-damaged railway stations Südbahnhof and Ostbahnhof were demolished and rebuilt as two terminal stations in a single building. The division between the south and east stations remained and at the same time the west station was the other important station in the post-war period.

With the opening of the border after 1989, transit traffic through Vienna also increased. The need for interconnected trains between the western and eastern lines was not previously given to a great extent. For example, those changing from Budapest to Munich had to laboriously change the train station within the city, or through trains had to make long detours.

Finally, the east and south stations were closed in December 2009 and then demolished, the Vienna Meidling station temporarily took over the entire traffic of the southern line. On the vacated site, the main station was built as a through station and two new districts with thousands of apartments (Sonnwendviertel and Quartier Belvedere, mostly still under construction) on large former railway areas.

In December 2012, the main train station began operating partially, and in December 2015 it went into full operation. Since then, the main train station has handled all long-distance traffic through Vienna as well as all regional traffic on the southern, eastern and northern railways. Only regional traffic of the Westbahn and trains of the private railway company Westbahn remained at the Westbahnhof.

Tourist Attractions

Mural Vienna panorama in the USTRAB stationCentral station - Südtiroler Platz of the Wiener Linien

The striking diamond-shaped roof, for which more steel was allegedly used than for the Eiffel Tower, is worth seeing at the station itself. The "Bahnorama" observation tower, once the tallest wooden tower in Europe, which was specially built to observe the construction of the main train station, has been closed since December 2014 and was demolished in September 2016 after delays.

The most important meeting point in the main hall by the entrance area is the St. Mark's Lion, a remnant of the old Gloggnitz train station, which was already in the hall in the south train station and was renovated after it was demolished. He now greets all rail travelers again.

If you have a little time to kill, you can visit the Belvedere Palace with its museums, the Schweizergarten, the "21er-Haus" (museum for contemporary art), the Favoritenstrasse pedestrian zone or the modern Sonnwendviertel in the immediate vicinity. For example, the large Helmut-Zilk-Park, which is already shown on maps, houses an approximately 1400 m² motor skills park.

In the Ustrab station Central station - Südtiroler Platz is, next to other Ustrab and U-Bahn stations, a picture of the Art series of the Wiener Linien.
