Znojmo (German Znaim) is a city with numerous well-preserved and restored historical buildings, which is visited by many, mainly Czech, tourists.

getting there
By train
Of Vienna Meidling regional trains run every two hours directly to Znojmo (boarding also in Vienna Central Station Platform 1/2, S-Bahn floor, Wien Mitte, Praterstern and Floridsdorf possible) over Stockerau, Hollabrunn and Retz. The journey takes 1½ hours, the normal price is € 18.90, a Euregio ticket for € 20 (round trip, valid for four days) is available from ÖBB (as of February 2016).
Of Břeclav there are hourly regional trains (travel time 1:20 hours) over Valtice and Mikulov; in Břeclav there is a connection to long-distance trains Prague, Bratislava and Warsaw.
There are also individual direct regional train connections Jihlava (Iglau), you usually have to change trains in Okříšky (journey time approx. 2:15 hrs). Znojmo can also be reached from Prague via Jihlava with slow regional trains and multiple changes, which means that the much longer route via Břeclav is usually preferable.
By bus
The fastest connection from Brno is by bus line 108 (Expres Znojmo) IDS JMKwhich goes from the Brno bus station (Autobusové nádraží) to Znojmo in 52 minutes without stopping. The normal line 108 with intermediate stops, however, takes 1:15 hours. The journey costs 78 CZK in both.
Regiojet offers buses from Prague to Znojmo four times a day. In the morning and in the evening there is a bus without stopping (travel time 2:50) and one that stops along the way, including in Jihlava (1:15 hours) A one-way trip from Prague costs 210 Kč (8 €), from Jihlava 80 Kč (3 €). The same company offers a bus service from Vienna to Znojmo twice a day. The journey from the Stadioncenter bus terminal takes 1:15 hours and costs € 9; from Schwechat airport it takes 1:50 hours and costs € 13.50.
In the street
- From Vienna via the A22 bis Stockerau and then continue over the S3 and B303 Hollabrunn and Kleinhaugsdorf. At the border you pass the Excalibur City. You do not need a Czech vignette on the Czech side.
- From Prague follow the D1 direction Brno and leaves it in Jihlava (Iglau). Immediately follow I-38 for about 90 km south.
By bicycle
The leads through Znojmo Iron Curtain Europe Cycle Route (EuroVelo 13). Of Laa an der Thaya it is, for example, 51 km, from Retz 21 km, from Hardegg 28 km.

Various cycle routes cross the town. The paths are relatively well signposted. It is astonishing that the locals hardly ever travel by bike. Even if you make good progress with touring bikes, mountain bikes have the great advantage of better gear ratios to overcome the sometimes steep inclines. From the river to the city center there is an estimated 70 m difference in altitude over a relatively short distance.
Down the Dyje
You can follow the Dyje to the east. Essentially, you are moving here on the southern bank. The paths are paved. From time to time you have to share the area with cars. You often have the opportunity to stay at the dyje for a while.
In a westerly direction
Again, you have to either go down the road or one of the hiking trails down to the river. Unfortunately, you don't have the opportunity to continue along the river. You move over long distances in a beautiful valley along a brook that has dried up in summer. Numerous benches make it possible to take breaks. Essentially, you drive along the yellow / green / yellow or white / blue / white route. On a few short stretches, mountain bikes are more advantageous when you have to go over rough stones or narrow, sloping paths. After about 8 km you leave the forest and you come to an asphalt road. In the village to the north is the next only restaurant, which does not open until 5:00 p.m. In the village in a southerly direction there is always the option of drinks and snacks (crackers and pizza) at a restaurant.

Particularly in a westerly direction, in the valley and nature reserve, there are beautiful and marked hiking opportunities.
Boat tours
At the foot of the old town, on the Dyje river, there is a canoe rental station for 2 and 3-seater canoes and rubber dinghies. The price for a complete canoe is around 300 crowns per day. The return after approx. 15 km canoe tour costs 600 crowns, which you can share with other tour participants if you return together. It is advisable to reserve a boat for the weekends. The tour is only possible downstream. There are some weirs along the way. To overcome this, a boat slide must be used. Transferring is not possible. In order to avoid capsizing the boat as much as possible, it is recommended that all persons except one leave the boat. The weirs consist of coarse, sometimes sharp-edged and slippery stones.
