Stockerau is a city in Lower Austria. With around 17,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the Weinviertel.

background

Stockerau is located about 25 km northwest of Vienna on the left bank of the Danube at the eastern end of the Tullner Basin and the Wagram ridge. In addition to the city of Stockerau, the municipality also includes the three localities Leitzersdorf, Oberzögersdorf and Unterzögersdorf.

The name Stockerau means the Au der Holzfäller (Stocker-Au). The settlement was mentioned for the first time Stoccaerouwe in 1012. Stockerau is also called "Lenaustadt" because the poet Nikolaus Lenau often spent time here with his grandparents in his youth.

Although Stockerau is an important traffic junction, the largest city in the Weinviertel and an important economic center, Stockerau is not the district capital. Stockerau is administered in the Korneuburg district.
