At the time of Roman rule, the Comagena fort was located in Tulln, which secured the Limes. Later the settlement was called a city (Comagenis Civitas). The name Tullina was first mentioned in the 9th century, under Avar colonization. In the Eastern Austrian dialect, the double L in the city name is pronounced very loosely, the city is referred to as "Tujn".
