The Waldviertel is the northwest part Lower Austria, geologically part of the "Bohemian mass", a granite plateau, which is characterized by its own, relatively harsh climate.

For decades the region was economically disadvantaged due to its location on the "Iron Curtain", but it is catching up - due to close cooperation Czech Republic - now quickly, also in the tourist area. The region has only a few larger settlements and is very wooded.

From Vienna Franz-Josef-Bahnhof you can reach Gmünd with the Rex (Region Express) train.
In the street
Of Vienna you can reach the Waldviertel via federal road 4.
Many places in the Zwettl district can often be reached more quickly and conveniently by road using the following routes:
- From Vienna (west) and Salzburg via the A1 to the node St. Polten, continue via the S33 bis Krems at the Donau, then via the B37 and B38 to Zwettl (city).
- From Vienna (south / east) and Graz Via the A21 and A1 to the node St. Polten, continue via the S33 bis Krems at the Donau, then via the B37 and B38 to Zwettl (city).
- From Vienna (north / east) via the A22 to junction Stockerau, continue via the S5 bis Krems at the Donau, then via the B37 and B38 to Zwettl (city).
The usual travel time from Vienna to Zwettl (city) is around 90 to 120 minutes with smooth traffic by car for all three variants. Modifications of the three variants mentioned are also common for parts of the Melk and Gmünd districts.

The disused, narrow-gauge railway between Heidenreichstein and Gmuend is owned by a private society operated as a museum railway and offers, among other things, trips with steam trains.

- The Poppy flower takes place from the end of June to mid-July. The fields, which glow in white, purple and red, are worth seeing. The flowers should be potted for 2-3 weeks, depending on the weather.

The Waldviertel is known for Poppy seed delicacies. From the MognAs the locals call poppy seeds, many dishes and products are made, from the Waldviertel poppy cake to poppy seed oil. The Waldviertel Gray poppy is protected within the EU.

A specialty of the Waldviertel is that carp, which is offered in many ways of preparation. If you read carp fleeced on the menu, then the bones are so cut that you can no longer feel them while eating. The carp can usually be enjoyed as a fillet, floured, baked (breaded) or plain. The side dishes vary, but potatoes are almost always included.
Pig corn. are patties made from finely chopped cured meat, wrapped in pork net, cold-smoked and then cooked. They can be eaten cold and warm.

Waldviertel Dumplings are prepared from half raw and half cooked potatoes and wheat semolina. They serve as an accompaniment to dishes such as roast pork or smoked meat. They are offered filled as a separate dish. Popular fillings are gram (fried bacon cubes), roasted pork, smoked meat (smoked meat), cheese or blunzn (black pudding).
The Waldviertel is just like the neighboring one Czech Republic, Home to numerous good beer breweries, but most of them only produce small quantities. Accordingly, the beers often only marketed regionally. Well-known brands are: Zwettler, Schremser and Weitraer.
The yellow-green Creepy is a subspecies of the plum. It is processed into jams, roasters, compotes, juices, fine brandies, liqueurs and other delicacies.

The region's climate is slightly stimulating. The Waldviertel is therefore one of the healthiest regions in Austria. The slightly lower temperatures are offset by the large number of hours of sunshine.
