Weitra (Czech Vitoraz) is a city in Waldviertel near the Czech border. The main attractions are the well-preserved city center, the renaissance castle and the parish church in the neighboring community of Unserfrau-Altweitra from the 12th century. Weitra is known throughout Austria for the long beer brewing tradition and the local brewery that produces Weitra beer.
background
history: Weitra was founded in 1201 by Hadmar II from Kuenring. The city originally belonged to Bohemia, but fell to the Habsburgs in 1296. The region was and is still famous for the numerous breweries, of which only a few are left. Otherwise the region is dominated by agriculture. Real industrialization could not take place because of the poor transport connections, the Waldviertel textile industry has been almost non-existent for about 30 years.
After the First World War and in particular with the construction of the Iron Curtain in 1945, Weitra lost the economic hinterland that was in the Czech Republic. The traffic connections were partially re-established after 1990, but there is still no such strong interaction as before.
The municipality covers 12 Localities: Großwolfgers, Oberbrühl, Oberwindhag, Reinprechts, St. Wolfgang, Spital, Sulz, Tiefenbach, Unterbrühl, Walterschlag, Weitra, Wetzles.
Neighboring communities are Unserfrau-Altweitra, Großdietmanns, Moorbad Harbach, Schweiggers, Waldenstein, St. Martin, Bad Großpertholz, Großschönau
