Krems is a city on the Danube in Lower Austria, and is about 70 km west of Vienna at the eastern exit of the Wachau.

background

The city looks back on more than a thousand years of history. There are signs of Germanic and Slavic settlement from pre-Roman times. The first documentary mention as Urbs Cremisia Dated to the year 995 AD. From the year 1000, more and more merchants and traders settled, so that the city became increasingly important. Its location on the Danube trading route made it one of the most important medieval trading centers on the Danube. The salt trade in particular flourished. In 1305 Krems-Stein was granted city rights. The city coat of arms, which is still valid today, was given to her on April 1, 1463 by Emperor Frederick III. awarded. It shows the red-tipped golden double-headed eagle with the imperial crown hovering over the heads on a black background.

trips

The baroque monastery is located a few kilometers to the south Göttweig (http://www.stiftgoettweig.or.atExcursions (preferably by ship) to the Wachau.

About 10 km north of Krems is the wine village of Langenlois with the "Loisium", a special kind of wine experience with an attached hotel. The wine cellars, some of which are 900 years old, under the modern main building can be hiked over a distance of one kilometer on a "journey" through the world of wine. http://www.loisium.at

A trip to the is highly recommended Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Region that ends in Krems. The best way to explore this very scenic area is by taking the Wachau Railway or by boat (which is best coupled up the Danube due to the long shipping time - one direction by boat, the other by train back, but the train only runs between Krems and Pointed.
