Grein is an Upper Austrian municipality in the Lower Mühlviertel in the district of Perg. It is the capital of the Strudengau, a narrow Danube valley between Ardagger and Ybbs. The notorious one was in Grein Danube vortexthat caused many ships to sink; it was removed in the 19th century by blasting rocks on the river bed.

Donauuferbahn Linz - Sarmingstein with regional express trains. There are two train stations in the city:

  • Grein city
  • Grein Bad Kreuz

By bus

Bus 385: Grein ship landing stage - Grein Bad Kreuzen station - Ardagger - Amstetten Train station. Travel time approx. 25 minutes, runs every hour.

In the street

  • Greiner Danube Bridge approx. 3 km south of the city center: the only way to cross the Danube between the Wallsee power plant (25 km upstream) and the Persenbeug power plant (approx. 30 km downstream).
  • A1 E60 Western motorway Symbol: AS 123 Amstetten West - approx. 15 km via the B119 to Grein.
  • B3 Danube Road along the left bank of the Danube: Linz - Perg - Grein - Persenbeug - Emmersdorf - Wachau - Krems
  • B119 Greiner Strasse ins Waldviertel: A1 exit Amstetten West - Greiner Danube Bridge - Grein - Arbesbach - Great Gerungs - Weitra

By boat

Grein is a landing stage for excursion and cruise ships, and there is also a harbor for private boats.

By bicycle

Grein is on Danube Cycle Path Passau-Vienna. Both banks of the Danube are passable in the course of this cycle path, although you can change sides at the Danube bridge. Grein is an ideal stopover or overnight stop because of its range of restaurants, hotels and a campsite.

  • 1 Greinburg Castle (early 17th century): three-storey arcade courtyard, state rooms, chapel with marble altar and stone theater Sala terrena. This is in the castle Upper Austrian Maritime Museum.
  • Parish Church of St. Giles. Late Gothic hall church, baroque high altar (1749) with painting by Bartolomeo Altomonte.
  • The Town center is an ensemble of houses from the 16th and 17th centuries with predominantly baroque facades.
    • Historic city theater Grein. Rococo building from 1791 with a theater exhibition.
    • Old Town Hall. 1563, today the city theater.
    • Café bouquet of flowers. In one of the oldest houses: interior design in the Biedermeier style.
  • Railway viaduct. The Donauuferbahn: seven arches over the Gießenbach (Stillensteinklamm).
  • Tapestry room. Viewing platform with a great panoramic view of the Danube valley.
  • Stillenstein Gorge. 2 km east of the city center, the Gießenbach cut about 200 meters deep into the granite and gneiss highlands and exposed impressive rock formations.
