background

Purkersdorf was founded around the year 1000 as a Purchartesdorf, and the castle was also built around the 12th century. As a result, the forest area including Purkersdorf was an imperial ban forest.

In the 19th century, the previously inconspicuous forest village experienced a boom thanks to its convenient location on the Reichsstraße to Linz and the Western Railway. Numerous aristocrats and wealthy citizens relocated to the Wienerwald community, some magnificent villas in the Heimat- and later Art Nouveau as well as a sanatorium were built. In 1929 Purkersdorf became a market town; 1938 as part of the newly created 14th district Penzing incorporated into Greater Vienna. In 1954 Purkersdorf became an independent municipality again and in 1966 it was raised to the status of a town.

From the second half of the 20th century Purkersdorf became a popular community for wealthy Viennese who moved their residence from the city center here. Purkersdorf has also been very popular as a day trip destination from Vienna for hikes in the Vienna Woods since the 19th century.
