Retz

Retz is a city in the northwest Weinviertel. In the beautiful old town there is access to one of the largest interconnected wine cellar systems in the world, some of which have been prepared as an "adventure cellar".

By plane

By train

  • From Vienna (Floridsdorf, Praterstern, Mitte, Hauptbahnhof below, Meidling) with the S-Bahn to Retz (approx. 1 hour, runs every hour) or with a regional train to Znojmo. Trains stop along the way also in Korneuburg, Stockerau and Hollabrunn.
  • From Znojmo (Connection from / to Jíhlava) with a regional train (approx. 15 min.)
  • Phylloxera Express: the nostalgic train runs on weekends from 1.5. until October 26th on the Retz-Drosendorf route, which is otherwise closed to passenger traffic

The Retz train station is approx. 400 m southeast of the main square.

Monuments

  • 3  Retzer adventure cellar (Cellar Museum), Access to Hauptplatz 30. Tel.: 43 2942 2700. One of the largest historical wine cellars in Central Europe. There are also extensive wine cellars under the main square.

  • Retz Museum. Local History Museum and South Moravian Gallery, "Citizens' Hospital".
  • Bicycle museum in the bulk box, below Gatterburg Castle.

Natural monuments

  • Gupferter Berg, east of Unteralb. Former medieval local mountain, today the habitat of the subshrub (Bassia prostrata) rare in Austria.
  • Egg stone. A rock north-west of the city, which is reminiscent of a giant egg with a partially uncovered shell.
  • Schredlkeller artificial cave system, in Obernalb.
  • Hangenstein rock formation. With dry grass southeast of the city.
  • Heidenstatt rock formation. Or sacrificial stone at Hofern.

  • Retz adventure pool. Outdoor pool with a normal pool (water slide) and a large sports pool. Ice skating rink in winter.
  • Skate park, basketball and soccer field near the town exit towards Kleinhöflein at the volunteer fire brigade.
