Sitzendorf on the Schmida is a market town in western Weinviertel and known for the historic main square, the basic structure of which dates back to pre-industrial times, as well as for the archaeological excavations on the Sandberg near Roseldorf, the largest known Celtic settlement.

  • Parish Church of St. Martin: Late Gothic with a large three-aisled, three-nave church building and ribbed vaults. In the parish church there is the grave slab of Hanns von Wulfestorff from the year 1504. For more information see Wikipedia: Parish church Sitzendorf an der Schmida
  • Historic main square: The planned marketplace (today "Hauptplatz") is around 60 meters wide and 170 meters long and is surrounded by closed structures. The construction has largely been the same as it is today since the installation in the 13th century. There have been hardly any changes since the beginning of the 19th century. Outstanding buildings in this ensemble include:
  • former hospital and orphanage from 1520 with a mighty Gothic bay window (Hauptplatz 13)
  • Art Nouveau villa with corner tower from 1912 with decor in the form of the Wiener Werkstätte (Hauptplatz 10)

  • Archaeological excavations on the Sandberg: The largest currently known Celtic settlement in Austria was located northeast of the village of Roseldorf on the Sandberg. The excavations are carried out by the Prehistoric Department of the Natural History Museum Vienna. The excavations take place in the warm season, there is an annual "open day" to visit the facility and to discuss with the archaeologists. Otherwise you can find out about the extent, the importance and the archaeological knowledge gained on site using the display boards and border markings.
  • Celtic exhibition: Showroom for the excavations of the Celtic settlement on Sandberg in the municipal office of Sitzendorf. Visits are possible in the morning during the opening times of the municipal office (Hauptplatz 20).
  • The replica of a Celtic sanctuary from Roseldorf is in the MAMUZ Prehistory Museum in Asparn on the Zaya to see.

  • Mühlbergkellergasse: Partly two-line cellar lane at the northern exit of Sitzendorf. It was built in a ravine in the 18th century. The building fabric consists of gable and eaves press houses with saddle and crooked roofs from the 19th and 20th centuries. The historical appearance was largely preserved and some old tree presses and other parts of the equipment are still in place.
