There were public baths in Vienna as early as Roman times. In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, baths were reserved for the upper class. There was no bathing culture like that in the Turkish region, which extended to the Vienna city limits until 1683. At the latest with the beginning of industrialization, a large part of the population in Vienna also lived in miserable hygienic conditions.

With the regulation of the Danube in Vienna in the 1870s, numerous standing oxbow lakes and water bodies arose in the vicinity. The former main river of the Danube - today's Old Danube - also became a lake. With the strong population growth of the Wilhelminian era - in 1910 more than 2 million people lived in Vienna, some of them very confined - these bodies of water were increasingly used for recreational purposes. The expansion of the urban tram network, which greatly improved the accessibility of these bodies of water, also helped.

As early as 1900, numerous colonies and settlements, some legal and some wild, emerged on the waters of the eye, which were often used by those seeking relaxation. At this time Florian Berndl also founded the first forerunner of a modern lido in Vienna, the bathing colony on the island of Großes Gänsehäufel in the middle of the Old Danube near Kaisermühlen. Today, Vienna's largest public lido is located there, the Goosepop.

After the First World War, Vienna became a federal state in its own right and was dominated by social democrats politically. Most of the population, especially the lower and middle classes, still lived in substandard apartments without bathrooms and with water only in the corridor. The city soon built baths, along with other social institutions that were revolutionary at the time. At that time the baths were mainly used for personal hygiene, in the so-called "drip baths" there were showers that were accessible to everyone for little money. But the first urban open-air, indoor and beach baths were also built, which in addition to facilities for personal hygiene also had swimming pools and sports pools, as well as sunbathing areas, etc. They were also financially supported by the city and therefore had affordable entrance fees for poorer people. These baths were often overloaded on hot summer weekends. The trams had their own, increased, bathing traffic. Often the blue flag had to be hoisted, which meant: The bathroom is full, no more admission.

In the post-war period, the number of substandard apartments in Vienna gradually declined. The baths were still very popular and, just as they were before the war, overloaded, but their main function gradually changed from personal hygiene to leisure and relaxation. The shower baths ("drip baths"), of which there were once several in every district, gradually disappeared. Today there is only one such bath in the 16th district, all others are combined with sauna baths.

In parallel to the bathing establishments, wild or free bathing opportunities were also extremely popular in summer, as there were no admission prices, access restrictions or opening times. The innundation area (flood area) on the left bank of the Danube was particularly popular. This disappeared with the construction of the Danube Island (1970s and 1980s), the relief channel (New Danube) was created. In the event of a flood, this body of water is an efficient protection of the city from flooding. Most of the year, however, the New Danube is a popular bathing water. Since it is still accessible free of charge, but the infrastructure is much better developed than the old floodplain, visits to the bathing facilities have also decreased. They are still popular and overcrowded on good days, but the blue flag is rarely hoisted these days.

Cultural and social importance

A special feature of many baths in Vienna - private and urban - is that you can lease seasonal cabins. In these cabins you can store your private items, even beyond the season. Many of these cabins have been passed down within the family for generations. In the different bathing complexes, special subcultures developed in some cases, as the cabin tenants have known each other for years and also maintain their special lifestyle. The bathing beaches on the Old Danube are particularly famous for this cabin subculture. Numerous Viennese celebrities are or were cabin tenants in the various baths.

The cabin subculture was the subject of the 2009 hip-hop song by the Viennese group Skero. The song "Cabin Party" (Skero feat. Joyce Muniz) is about a spontaneous party in a seasonal cabin and stayed in the Austrian top 10 for a few weeks. The music video was shot in the Kongressbad. The Gänsehäufel municipal lido was also the subject of the song "Strada del Sole" by Rainhard Fendrich (1981). At the end of the song, the protagonist of the song declares that he will never go to Italy again because he prefers the goose shovel. Life in Vienna's outdoor swimming pools was also a topic in Fendrich's hit "Oben ohne". The "Tröpferlbad" is also a recurring theme in the Viennese television series "A real Viennese does not go under" (1970s), as the protagonist Mundl persistently refuses to build a bathroom into the apartment. You could save the money because there was a drip bath just around the corner anyway. After several episodes, he nevertheless had to bow to pressure from his family. The author of the series, Ernst Hinterberger, also rented a seasonal cabin in the Gänsehäufel lido for many years. Bathing season

Indoor pools are open all year round. The outdoor and lido season for the municipal baths begins on May 2nd and ends on a Sunday in mid-September. Free bathing opportunities

Danube Island

The Danube Island was built between 1972 and 1988. It is an artificial island 21 km long and 250 m wide between the Danube and the New Danube. It is mostly located in the urban area of ​​Vienna, the northernmost tip belongs to the municipality Klosterneuburg, but is only from the left bank (municipality Langenzersdorf) accessible.

The New Danube was created as a relief channel for the purpose of flood protection. Originally there was the floodplain (innundation area), which was very popular as a recreation area, but did not adequately provide flood protection. At high tide, however, the lock systems are opened, the New Danube transports the high water away, and it is not suitable for swimming.

The northern and southern parts of the island and the shores of Transdanubia are laid out close to nature, with forests, meadows and floodplain vegetation as well as dead water. The part close to the center between the U6 and the U2 is more urban and park-like, with the Copa Cagrana and the Sunken City there are numerous popular nightspots.

Accordingly, the entire length of the New Danube can be used as free swimming and bathing water, but the main Danube river is suitable Not for taking a bath! The infrastructure on the New Danube is of course less developed than in paid outdoor pools. Toilets are mostly mobile toilets or pit toilets, there are hardly any showers. On the banks of the 21st district there is a water slide into the New Danube at the Brigittenauer Bridge. The water slide, which opened in 1985, was reopened in June 2014 after several years of renovation. With a length of 208 meters, it is the longest water slide in Vienna and one of the longest in Austria. On its way it leads under the Danube pirate restaurant (operator of the slide) and a cycle path and ends in a catchment basin in the New Danube.
The journey by public transport is a bit tedious and requires further footpaths: Approx. 1200 m from the U1 station Kaisermühlen or just as far from the Traisengasse / Engerthstraße bus stop for lines 5A, 11A and 11B on the other bank of the Danube.

There are also numerous designated barbecue areas, boat and bicycle rentals on the Danube Island. Every year in mid-June, the three-day Danube Island Festival takes place on the Danube Island between Reichsbrücke and Nordbrücke, a large open-air festival with live concerts of all styles, which is attended by more than a million visitors with free entry.

With only a few parking spaces along the New Danube, all of which are chargeable, it is not a good idea to travel by car on beautiful bathing days. Old Danube

The Old Danube is located in the districts 21. and 22. It was the main river of the Danube until the Danube was regulated. Then this part of the river was cut off from the main stream and turned into an oxbow lake. Due to its location close to the city, it quickly became a popular local recreation area. Lobau

Don't swim here!

  • Danube Canal: The Danube Canal has green banks on the banks further away from the city, where people also like to sunbathe. Bathing in the Danube Canal is forbidden. It is also not advisable due to the current, shipping traffic, and water quality.
  • Danube main stream: Bathing is not forbidden here, but since there is heavy ship traffic, it is dangerous. There are also much better bathing resorts in the immediate vicinity with the New Danube.
  • Vienna River: Including the retention basin in Auhof, bathing in the Wien River is not allowed and also not recommended.
  • The Marchfeld Canal Although paddle boats may be used, swimming is prohibited.
  • Freudenau, Ölhafen and Albern docks: Bathing ban, heavy shipping, poor water quality.
  • Urban fountains and ponds in urban parks: Even if bathing is not forbidden here, adults are not welcome to splash around here. However, it is tolerated in young children.

Lidos

With the exception of the Stadlau lido, which is located on the Mühlwasser, all of Vienna's lido are located on the Old Danube. They mostly offer restaurants on the premises, sports facilities (partly subject to a fee) and partly also the rental of loungers or parasols.

The municipal baths are administered by the Municipal Authority of the City of Vienna, MA 44. All municipal bathing beaches have the same season and opening times as well as entrance fees. Season tickets entitle you to visit all municipal pools (including indoor pools, etc.).

The swimming season for the municipal outdoor pools begins on May 2nd and ends on a Sunday in mid-September.   • Das Arbeiterstrandbad war ein großes Strandbad an der Arbeiterstrandbadstraße gleich neben dem Strandbad Alte Donau. Es schloss nach der Sommersaison 2014 endgültig seine Pforten, das Gelände ging wieder in die Verwaltung der Stadt Wien zurück und ist seit Juni 2015 frei zugänglich.
  • Auch das Polizeibad am Dampfschiffhaufen ist ein sehr bekanntes Strandbad, es ist aber nur für Mitglieder der Polizeisportvereinigung Wien zugänglich.

Das Amalienbad bietet neben einer Schwimmhalle auch eine Sauna, ein Brausebad, ein Sonnendeck (Mai bis September), Fußpflege, Kosmetik, Massage, ein Ambulatorium für Physiotherapie und ein Restaurant. Neben seiner Funktion als städtisches Bad ist das Amalienbad auch ein architektonisches Juwel der Zwischenkriegszeit, errichtet 1923-1926 von den Architekten Karl Schmalhofer und Otto Nadel im Art-Déco-Stil [5]. Im Amalienbad befindet sich auch das Büro der städtischen Bäderverwaltung MA 44.

Für damalige Zeiten war das Jörgerbad revolutionär, da auf die damals übliche Geschlechtertrennung verzichtet und erstmals ein Kinderbecken von Haus aus errichtet wurde. Bemerkenswert ist das Glasdach der Schwimmhalle, welches sich öffnen lässt. Geschichte: Das alte Dianabad im prunkvollen Ringstraßenstil wurde im zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört und in den 1960er-Jahren abgerissen. Das heutige Diana-Erlebnisbad mit Saunalandschaft wurde im Jahr 2000 errichtet und hat mit dem alten Bad nichts mehr gemeinsam. Als in den 1930er-Jahren südlich von Wien nach Öl gesucht wurde, fand man nur heißes Schwefelwasser. In den 1960ern wurde dann in Oberlaa das Thermalbad "Kurzentrum Oberlaa" eröffnet. Es wurde ab 2010 komplett saniert und unter dem neuen Namen "Therme Wien" vom neuen Betreiber VAMED wiedereröffnet. Das Stadthallenbad ist das wichtigste Zentrum für Schwimmsport in Wien. Dort trainieren Schwimmsportler und Turmspringer, es finden immer wieder internationale Wettkämpfe statt. Bei Wettkämpfen kein Publikumsbetrieb, sie werden auf der Homepage angekündigt. Das Sportbecken (50x25 m, acht Bahnen) hat einen Sprungturm (10 m), die Wassertiefe kann mit Hubbodentechnik variiert werden. Weiters Lehrschwimmbecken für Anfänger mit Schwimmkursen sowie ein Trainingsbecken (50x10 m). Sauna- und Wellnesslandschaft.
Architektur: Das Bad ist Teil der Wiener Stadthalle (1953-1958, Architekt Roland Rainer), größte Multifunktions-Sport- und -Veranstaltungshalle Europas und u.A. auch Location des Eurovision Song Contest 2015. Das Bad wurde 1974 eröffnet (Architekt Roland Rainer, modernistisch-funktionalistischer Stil) und steht wie die gesamte Stadthalle unter Denkmalschutz. Die Renovierung 2010-2014 war ein mittelgroßer Wiener Bauskandal, da sie viel länger dauerte und deutlich mehr kostete als ursprünglich geplant.

Kombibäder sind kombinierte Hallen- und Freibäder. Während das Hallenbad ganzjährig geöffnet ist, ist der Freibereich nur im Sommer geöffnet. Im Vergleich zu Hallenbädern mit Außenbereich ist der Freibereich des Kombibades deutlich größer. Es handelt sich funktional oft um zwei getrennte Bäder an derselben Adresse, wobei Hallen- und Freibadbereich meist unterschiedliche Öffnungszeiten haben.

Alle Kombibäder der Stadt Wien werden von der MA 44 betrieben. Die Eintrittspreise sind identisch mit denen anderer städtischer Hallen- und Freibäder (Erwachsene 5,50 Euro, zahlreiche Ermäßigungen - siehe dazu die Webseite der MA 44: https://www.wien.gv.at/freizeit/baeder/eintrittspreise/hallenbaeder.html). Die Freibadbereiche haben die selben Saisonzeiten wie die Städtischen Freibäder: Die Badesaison der Städtischen Freibäder beginnt am 2. Mai und endet an einem Sonntag Mitte September. Bei gutem Wetter kann spontan auf einen vorzeitigen Saisonbeginn oder ein verspätetes Saisonende entschieden werden. Ob sich eine Anreise ins Bad auszahlt, kann bei der Bäderampel der Stadt Wien in Erfahrung gebracht werden. Öffnungszeiten der Freibäder sind Mo-Fr 9-20; Sa, So und Fei 8-20 Uhr. Bis 15. Mai und ab 1. September sperren die Freibäder bereits um 19 Uhr. Die Öffnungszeiten der Hallenbereiche sind je nach Bädern unterschiedlich, wechseln meist über die Wochentage und können auf den Webseiten der Bäder eingesehen werden.

Das Simmeringer Bad verfügt im Hallenbereich über ein Sportbecken, Lehrschwimmbecken und Babybecken, eine Sauna, Massage und Restaurant. Im Freibereich gibt es ein Wellenbecken, ein Erlebnisbecken, Wasserrutsche, Sonnenbad, große Liegewiese sowie Sport- und Fitnessangebote (u.A. Fitnessparcours, Streetsoccer, Volleyball).

Eines der kleinsten Freibäder Wiens mit Mehrzweck- und Kinderbecken, jeweils mit Wasserrutsche, und Tischtennis.

Das "Kongerl", wie das Kongressbad im Volksmund genannt wird, verfügt über ein Sportbecken und ein Erlebnisbecken mit 64 m langer Wasserrutsche. Weiters finden sich dort zahlreiche Ballspielplätze und ein Riesenschachspiel.
Architektur: Das Kongressbad wurde 1928 eröffnet und war mit einem 100 m langen Becken ausgestattet. Das damals größte und modernste Freibad Wiens ist auch eng mit der Geschichte des sozialdemokratischen Wiens verbunden, da es für den danebenliegenden Wohnpark Sandleiten, der größte Gemeindebau der Zwischenkriegszeit, eine wichtige infrastrukturelle Ergänzung darstellte. Große Teile des Bades (Architekt Erich Franz Leischner) stehen unter Denkmalschutz, darunter der monumentale Eingangsbereich im Art-Déco-Stil sowie die schlichten aber zweckmäßigen Holzkabinentrakte in typischer rot-weißer Bemalung.

Das Schafbergbad bietet vom namensgebenden Berg einen tollen Ausblick über Wien und wird ähnlich wie der Nachbar in Grinzing (Krapfenwaldlbad) von der Haute Volée Wiens besucht. Es verfügt über ein Sportbecken mit Sprungturm und Wasserrutsche sowie zahlreiche Ballspielplätze.
Anfahrt: Buslinie 42B (ab Gersthof) bis Haltestelle Schafbergbad.
Das "Krawa", wie das Bad im Volksmund genannt wird, bietet von der großen Liegewiese einen tollen Ausblick über Wien. Es gilt als Nobelbad Wiens und wird von der Haute Volée besucht. Es verfügt über ein Sportbecken und Erlebnisbecken mit Massagedüsen sowie zahlreiche Ballspielplätze.
Anfahrt: Mit der Buslinie 38A (ab Heiligenstadt oder Grinzing) bis Haltestelle Wagenwiese, dann 300 m Fußweg durch den Wald.
Neben einem Sportbecken und einem Mehrzweckbecken mit Wasserrutsche gibt es im Höpflerbad auch Beachvolleyball, Fitness, Tischtennis und ein russisches Kegelspiel.

Das Badeschiff ist der Szenetreff im Wiener Stadtzentrum. Es ist ein Ponton am Donaukanal und verfügt über ein 16,7 m langes Sportbecken mit drei Schwimmbahnen, ein Sonnendeck mit Liegen und eine Sauna. An Bord befindet sich auch ein hochklassiges Szene-Restaurant und Bar, es gibt immer wieder interessante Veranstaltungen. Außerhalb der Badesaison hat das Badeschiff ebenfalls geöffnet. Sauna, Restaurant und Bar können genutzt werden, nur die Schwimmbecken sind geschlossen.

Wie das Schönbrunner Bad ist auch das Neuwaldegger Bad ein hochpreisiges Privatbad, das dafür mit einer tollen Lage im Wienerwald besticht. Allerdings gibt es mit den beiden städtischen Bädern im Krapfenwaldl und am Schafberg durchaus preisgünstigere Konkurrenten, die ebenso die tolle Waldlage bieten.

Brausebäder - im Volksmund Tröpferlbäder genannt, sind Überbleibsel aus der Zeit der Substandardwohnungen. Sie dienen auch heute noch zur Körperhygiene, es gibt dort Duschen. Sie sind meist mit einer Sauna kombiniert, es existiert in Wien nur mehr ein einziges von einst dutzenden reinen Brausebädern. In den Brause- und Saunabädern gibt es keine Schwimmbecken, keine ausgiebigen Liegebereiche und keine Freizeitangebote abseits der Sauna. Die folgenden Bäder werden von der Stadt Wien, MA 44, verwaltet.

Im Folgenden sind die Betriebszeiten der Bäder angegeben. Kassaschluss ist für Saunabäder 90 Minuten, für Brausebäder eine Stunde vor Betriebsschluss. Badeschluss ist eine halbe Stunde vor Betriebsschluss.

Der Saunabereich ist Nacktbereich, die Benutzung ist nicht mit Badebekleidung gestattet. Unterschiedliche Betriebszeiten für gemischten sowie geschlechtergetrennten Betrieb. Wenn in Folge eine Angabe zu Geschlecht fehlt, heißt das gemischt. Kleinkinder unter 2 Jahren dürfen nicht in die Sauna.

Familienbäder (früherer Name: Kinderfreibäder) sind kleine Sommerbäder. Das Angebot der Anlagen richtet sich vorwiegend an Kinder. Becken haben nur eine geringe Tiefe, weiters gibt es im Bad zahlreiche Kinderspieleinrichtungen mit und ohne Wasser. Historisch waren Kinderfreibäder eine Einrichtung des Roten Wien, die zahlreich in Parks und auf großen Plätzen im dicht bebauten Gebiet oder in Höfen großer Gemeindebauten angelegt wurden, um Kindern im Sommer Erholung und eine Möglichkeit zum Betreiben oder Erlernen der Körperhygiene zu bieten. Einst gab es deutlich mehr Familienbäder als heute von der Stadt Wien, MA 44, betrieben werden, wobei die kleinen Anlagen nach und nach geschlossen wurden, die großen jedoch ausgebaut.

Die Badesaison 2015 beginnt am 2. Mai und endet am 20. September. Öffnungszeiten Mo-So 10-19, 16. Mai bis 31. August bis 20 Uhr. Kinder unter sechs Jahren dürfen nur in Begleitung eines Erwachsenen ins Familienbad, Kinder und Jugendliche bis 14 Jahre dürfen auch ohne Begleitung eines Erwachsenen das Bad besuchen. Erwachsenene, die keine Kinder ins Bad begleiten, dürfen das Bad nicht betreten. Eintrittspreise: Kinder und Jugendliche bis 14 Jahre gratis, Erwachsene (Begleitpersonen) 3 Euro.

Auch die Umgebung von Wien bietet zahlreiche schöne Plätze zum Baden. Praktisch in jeder größeren Umlandgemeinde gibt es ein Hallen- und / oder Freibad. Einige prominente Beispiele sollen in Folge aufgezählt werden:

Regeln

  • Der Eintritt in die Bäder ist nur beim Eingang erlaubt.
  • In den Frei- und Strandbädern sind offenes Feuer (Campinggaskocher), Haustiere und Fahrräder nicht gestattet.
  • Musizieren und Lärmen wird nicht gerne gesehen.

Nudismus

  • Nudismus ist nur in ausgewiesenen FKK-Bereichen gestattet. Fast jedes größere Strandbad hat einen eigenen FKK-Bereich. Im FKK-Bereich ist wiederum keine Badekleidung gestattet. Auch das Fotographieren ist nicht erlaubt.
  • Neben FKK-Bereichen in den Bädern gibt es auch große ausgewiesene Nudistenbereiche in den stadtferneren Teilen der Donauinsel und in der Lobau (s. weiter oben) - dort ist allerdings FKK nicht verpflichtend, sondern optional!
  • Oben-Ohne bei Damen ist in den meisten Bädern auch außerhalb des FKK-Bereiches erlaubt.
  • Kleinkinder können in etwa bis zum Vorschulalter auch ohne Badekleidung herumlaufen.
  • Eine Sauna ist - so die Hausordnung nichts anderes besagt - nur nackt zu benutzen.

Barrierefreiheit

Fast alle Bäder sind barrierefrei zugänglich, auch die wichtigsten Einrichtungen sind entweder über Rampen oder Aufzüge erreichbar. Es gibt in jeder Einrichtung ausreichend Toiletten und Duschen für Rollstuhlfahrer, auch der Zugang zu den Badebecken wird meist mit einer Rampe oder einem Badelift ermöglicht. Taktile Leitsysteme hingegen gibt es nicht. Die von der Stadt Wien verwalteten Bäder listen auf der Bäderhomepage (siehe Liste der Bäder) Einrichtungen des Bades auf, die für mobilitätseingeschränkte Personen nutzbar sind.

In beaufsichtigten Badeanlagen versehen Bademeister Dienst, die sowohl für die Sicherheit wie auch Hygiene und Funktion der Einrichtungen zuständig sind. Im Notfall oder bei Beschwerden kann man sich direkt an sie wenden. Bei Erkrankungen oder Unfällen ist es schneller, einen Bademeister zu rufen, als selbst den Notruf zu wählen. Bademeister leisten auch erste Hilfe und verständigen selbst die Notrufe.

Auch in Wien sind Bäder, wie überall auf der Welt, ein Paradies für Taschendiebe, die sich an zurückgelassenen Wertgegenständen vergreifen. Man sollte daher Wertgegenstände nie unbeaufsichtigt lassen, im Kästchen oder der Kabine einsperren oder beim Eingang zur Verwahrung hinterlegen.

An den Naturgewässern teilt man sich die Liegewiesen mit Wildvögeln aller Art. Besonders Schwäne können sehr aggressiv werden und richtig böse zuschnappen. Man sollte immer einen Respektabstand halten, vor allem, wenn sie Junge haben.
