Schwechat is an industrial city in Lower Austria, just south of the Viennese City limits. The city, which can be counted functionally as part of Vienna's urban area, is dominated by numerous large industrial and transport structures, including the oil refinery and the Airport. Schwechat is also known throughout Austria for the brewery where Schwechat beer is made. International beer history was written here in 1841, when master brewer Anton Dreher was able to produce bottom-fermented beer (lager) industrially for the first time, even in summer.

background

Districts

The municipality of Schwechat comprises several districts, some of which have merged with Schwechat, some of which are functionally separate settlements:

  • Schwechat: Groß-Schwechat (south) and Klein-Schwechat (north of the Schwechat river)
  • Rannersdorf connects directly to the south of Klein-Schwechat.
  • Kledering: Small village on the border to 10th district of Vienna (near Unterlaa)
  • Mannswörth: Village on the Danube, in the vicinity of the Oil refinery
  • Airport Wien-Schwechat, at the east end of the parish

getting there

Public

The 1 Airport Wien-Schwechat lies in the municipality of Schwechater. From there, take a train on the S-Bahn line S7 in the direction of Vienna-Floridsdorf (from the airport between approx. 5 a.m. and midnight, twice an hour at xx: 18 and xx: 48 hours) to Schwechat or Vienna-Kaiserebersdorf. Fare 2.20 euros, travel time approx. 15 minutes.

Schwechat itself has three train stations: 2 Schwechat (formerly Groß-Schwechat) in the city center. 3 Vienna-Kaiserebersdorf (formerly Klein-Schwechat) on the city limits of Vienna, at Simmeringer Hauptstrasse and the brewery. As 4 Mannswörth near the oil refinery. All three stops are served by the S-Bahn line S7 (Vienna Floridsdorf - Wolfsthal), which runs twice an hour during the day. In Vienna she holds a.o. at the following important traffic junctions: Praterstern (U1, U2), Wien-Mitte (Landstraße, U3, U4), Rennweg (S-Bahn S1, S2 S3 from Meidling and Hauptbahnhof as well as SL 71), St. Marx (SL 18), Geiselbergstraße (SL 6). Travel time from the center of Vienna approx. 20 minutes, fare 2.20 euros. The Schwechat and Wien-Kaiserebersdorf train stations are still in core zone 100, so holders of Vienna season tickets cannot buy a ticket from Vienna. Mannswörth and the airport are already in the outer zone!

You can also easily get to Schwechat with the bus route 71A from Zentralfriedhof Tor III (also zone 100). This bus line has several stops in the city of Schwechat and also reaches the train station directly.

There are also regional buses from Vienna (Simmering and Siebenhirten) to Schwechat and to the districts such as Kledering and Mannswörth).

By car

  • From Vienna, take the A4 (towards Budapest) and change to the S1 (towards Graz / Linz) at the Schwechat junction. The city of Schwechat can be reached via one of the four exits Mannswörth, Schwechat Ost, Schwechat Süd or Rannersdorf.
  • One comes from Simmering, it is more sensible to take Simmeringer Hauptstrasse directly out of town to Schwechat.
  • If you come from the south 10th district, it is more sensible to drive directly to Schwechat via Unterlaa and Kledering.
  • From Linz, Graz or the south-west of Vienna, it is best to take the S 1 from the Vösendorf junction and then one of the above-mentioned exits.
