Engelhartstetten is a market town in Marchfeld. The two well-known baroque towns are located in the extensive municipal area, which in addition to the eponymous town also includes other small towns Marchfeldschlösser Niederweiden and Castle courtyard. The municipality is also located in the Stopfenreuther Au, which was occupied in 1984 by opponents of power plant construction. A few years later, instead of the Danube power plant, the Donauauen National Park set up.

background

The community Engelhartstetten is located in the southeast of the Marchfeld on the rivers Danube and March. In addition to the main town of Engelhartstetten, the following localities are located in the municipality:

  • Loimersdorf
  • Groißenbrunn
  • Schloßhof (written together) - village next to the baroque Schloss Hof (written separately)
  • Market courtyard
  • Stopfenreuth
  • Niederweiden (no village, only baroque palace)

By train

The Siebenbrunn-Engelhartstetten local railway was discontinued in 2003. Since then, the community no longer has a rail connection. The train stations can be reached via regional bus connections Marchegg (Connection to regional trains between Vienna Main station and Bratislava hl.s.) as well as Bad-Deutsch-Altenburg (connection to the S-Bahn line S7 Vienna-Floridsdorf / Praterstern / Mitte - Vienna Airport - Wolfsthal).

By bus

There are regional bus connections to the surrounding communities. For bus connections from Vienna to the baroque palaces, see the entries for these buildings in the Sights chapter.

In the street

Engelhartstetten is located at the eastern end of the B3 Donau Bundesstraße (Linz ... Vienna-Stadlau - Engelhartstetten). The B3 joins the B49 Bernstein Bundesstraße (Hainburg - Angern - Hohenau - Reintal - (Břeclav))

  • From Vienna optionally via the B3 from Stadlau Groß-Enzersdorf and Orth or via the A4 (exit Fischamend), the B9 across Petronell and the Hainburger Danube bridge (B49). Journey in both variants approx. One hour.
  • From Bratislava It is best to take trunk road 61 and the Berg border crossing (not the Jarovce / Kittsee motorway border crossing!) to the Hainburg Danube bridge and then switch to the B49.

By boat

On the Danube and March there is no liner shipping that reaches the community of Engelhartstetten. There are entry and exit options for private paddle boats and the like on the Danube in Stopfenreuth.

By bike / on foot

The Bicycle bridge of freedom (Cyklomost slobody) connects the castle courtyard with the Bratislava district of Devínska Nová Ves. Pedestrians and bicycles are allowed to cross. There are no border controls, but you still have to have a passport or identity card with you. Distance between the two villages approx. 3 km. In Devínska Nová Ves there is a connection to the urban public transport of Bratislava as well as to the Slovak rail network.

The community is located on the Danube Cycle Path Vienna-Bratislava and the March Cycle Path. The village of Groißenbrunn is the start of the 13 km long pilgrimage route to Marianka in Slovakia (Churches of the Birth of Mary with a comprehensive Way of the Cross at the foot of the Little Carpathians.

mobility

With greater distances between the villages and the sights, it is best to use your own vehicle. Because the Marchfeld is flat, it can also be a bicycle. Regional buses rarely run.

There is a bicycle rental in the castle courtyard.
