Marchegg is a municipality in Marchfeld, right on the March river and the border with Slovakia. The city is known, among other things, for the baroque castle and as access to the extensive, natural Marchauen.
background
The town and the castle were built in 1268 by King Přemysl Ottokar II of Bohemia as a fortress against Hungary. The founding city had an ax axis laid out according to medieval planning principles.
The city right on the border became important from the second half of the 19th century when the railway line to the east (Marchegger Ostbahn) was built here. Marchegg became a border station Hungary or later to the (Czecho)Slovakia. After the Second World War, however, Marchegg was largely on the sidelines, as the Iron Curtain ran directly on the March.
From the beginning of the 1970s, emigrant trains of Soviet Jews reached Austria at the Marchegg border station. On September 28, 1973, Palestinian terrorists kidnapped four hostages (three emigrants and an Austrian customs officer) from a train with Jewish emigrants, and the hostage-taking was ended without bloodshed.
Even after 1990, despite the opening of the borders, Marchegg was a bit on the sidelines, as apart from the railway line there was no bridge over the March to its Slovakian neighbors.
