Hainburg on the Danube is a small town in Lower Austria Industrial district on the border with Slovakia. The city is known for the well-preserved city wall with the city gates, through which the Vienna-Bratislava highway ran until 2006. The Hainburger Mountains (Braunsberg, Hundsheimer Berg and Spitzerberg) are the westernmost foothills of the Carpathians and together with the Theben Kogel the Hainburger gate; a narrow breakthrough valley of the Danube.

There are three train stations in Hainburg:

  • Hainburg an der Donau - culture factory
  • Hainburg an der Donau - passenger station
  • Hainburg on the Danube - Ungartor

All these stations can be reached with the S-Bahn line S7 without changing trains from Vienna; Approach among others possible in Floridsdorf, Praterstern and Wien Mitte-Landstrasse (Not Hauptbahnhof or Meidling!). The trains run every 30 minutes between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. and stop along the way. also in Schwechat, Vienna Airport, Fischamend, Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Terminal station of the S7 is Wolfsthal. The journey from Wien Mitte to Hainburg takes a little more than an hour, and you can take your bike with you. Fare 11.60 euros in the VOR (Verkehrsverbund Ost Region) or 9.20 euros from the core zone border if you have a ticket for Vienna.

For a tour of the old town or the castle hill with the Heymenburg, the stops Personenbahnhof and Ungartor are the most convenient.

  • Of Vienna From here you take the A4 motorway in the direction of Bratislava / Budapest to exit 19 (Fischamend). Then follow the B9 (Pressburger Bundesstrasse) for about 25 km Petronell-Carnuntum and bathroom German Altenburg to Hainburg.
  • Of Bratislava follow the signs mountain and from there the B9 drives about 10 km to Hainburg. Caution: Coming from the east you have to change to the collector lane immediately after the port bridge (Prístavný most), otherwise you will not get onto the old main road.
  • From Marchfeld (Gänserndorf, Marchegg) take the B 49 over the Danube bridge Hainburg to Bad Deutsch Altenburg, then about 5 km to the east.
  • Of Hungary via the M1 and A4 to the Bruck an der Leitha Ost exit and then the B211 via Petronell.

By boat

  • DDSG Blue Danube - Every first Sunday of the month (May to September) a DDSG ship sails from Vienna (Reichsbrücke) Orth on the Danube to Hainburg. The one-way trip to Hainburg costs 19 euros per person, and 26 euros there and back, seat reservations are recommended in advance. Further information on request from the company.
  • In May, August and September there is a ferry connection from Hainburg on every Sunday and public holiday Devin. Two courses a day.     • Hungarian. Built around 1230.
    • Wienertor. 13th century, it is the largest surviving medieval city gate in Central Europe. A special feature of this gate was that long-distance traffic to Bratislava had to pass through here before the opening of the A6 motorway.
