Fischamend is located on the right bank of the Danube at the confluence of the Fischa and Danube rivers. The Fischa river gave the city its name (Fischamend = Fischa estuary; also jokingly interpreted as "fish at the end"). The city consists of two historical villages on the opposite banks of the Fischa, which have now grown together:

  • Fischamend village (847 inhabitants) on the left bank of the Fischa
  • Fischamend market (3951 inhabitants) on the right bank of the Fischa

The river mills on the Danube and Fischa as well as a small Danube port were the most important economic factors in Fischamend in the pre-industrial times. In the second half of the 19th century, due to the favorable location in the vicinity of Vienna, industrial companies began to settle, which still shape the city today. In 1908 a production facility for airships and airplanes, including an airfield, and a hydrogen gas factory opened southeast of the town. The important center of the air forces of the Danube Monarchy had to be dismantled due to the peace treaties after the First World War. After the Anschluss in 1938, these facilities were rebuilt but destroyed again by bombs in 1944. Some buildings like the water tower, one of the landmarks of the city, are still reminiscent of the airfield.

In 1938, the German Wehrmacht built another airport, the Schwechat Airport. This was gradually expanded in the post-war period and is now one of the largest airports in Europe. Parts of the apron as well as runway 16/34 are located on Fischamend's municipal area, the city itself is in the approach path of runway 11/29.

Between 1938 and 1954, Fischamend was part of the newly created 23rd Schwechat District in Greater Vienna. In 1954 Fischamend was again excluded, on July 9, 1987 the town charter was granted.
