Groß-Enzersdorf is a municipality in Marchfeld directly at the Viennese City limits. It has an almost completely preserved city wall from the 14th century. Due to its location, the place is ideal both as a base and as a sightseeing stopover from Vienna for excursions in the Donauauen National Park at. In Groß-Enzersdorf there is also Austria's only drive-in cinema, on whose premises a large flea market takes place every Sunday.
background
Church organization
The municipality of Groß-Enzersdorf has an area of almost 84 km² and, in addition to the city of Groß-Enzersdorf, also includes the following localities:
- Auvorstadt, district at the south end of Groß-Enzersdorf
- Franzensdorf
- Matzneusiedl
- Mühlleiten
- Neu-Oberhausen
- Oberhausen
- Probstdorf
- Rutzendorf
- Schönau on the Danube

history
The place was founded in 870 on the then Danube island Sachsengang as a Meierhof by the Engelschalk family as Encines village. In 1021 the place and the surrounding area were donated by Emperor Heinrich II to Weihenstephan Monastery, in 1028 the place went to the Hochstift Freising, which was pledged the town in 1202. In 1396 the place received city rights and the city wall, which has been preserved to this day, was built.
Over the centuries the city has been destroyed several times, including in the first Turkish siege in 1529, in a major fire in 1554, in the 30 Years War and in 1683 in the second Turkish siege. In 1850, Groß-Enzersdorf became the seat of a district administration, which was relocated to Floridsdorf in 1897.
After Austria was annexed to the Third Reich, Groß-Enzersdorf was incorporated into Vienna in 1938 and gave the newly created 22nd district of Vienna its name. It was not until 1954 that Groß-Enzersdorf became an independent municipality again and became the 22nd district of Vienna in Danube city renamed.
