Nyíregyháza is the county seat of the Hungarian county Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg in north-east Hungary and with approx. 120,000 inhabitants the seventh largest city in the country. Due to its proximity to the borders to Romania and the Ukraine as well as very good road and rail connections, the city is an important transit point.

The extensive boundaries of the city also include numerous functionally independent villages and settlements, including the town of Sóstó, which is home to a spa, an open-air museum and the zoo.

By plane

The nearest airport with scheduled service is in Debrecen, about 50 km south of the city. From there the low-cost airline offers Wizz Air Regular connections to London Luton and Eindhoven.

Liszt Ferenc Airport in Budapest is approx. 350 km to the west.

By train

Nyíregyháza is well connected with express and regional trains from Budapest (Keleti), there are also direct trains Budapest-Kiev (via Mukacheve) through the city. The rail connections to Romania are interrupted, you have to change trains in Debrecen.

Churches

  • Evangelical Martin Luther Church. Erected 1784-86 in late Baroque style according to plans by Giuseppe Aprilis.
  • Hungarian Greek Catholic Church. Erected 1885-1909 in the Byzantine style.
  • Roman Catholic Cathedral. Neo-Romanesque architectural style, three aisles, red brick, two 44 m high towers.

Buildings

  • town hall. Erected in 1892 (Kossuth Square) in the style of eclecticism.
  • House of the county seat. Built 1891–1893 according to plans by Ignác Alpár.
  • Sparpalast. Historic bank building, built in 1912 in the eclectic style by József Hubert.
  • Szabolcs Takarék Bank building. In the architectural style of eclecticism with a historical counter hall and contemporary stained glass.
  • Nyírvíz Palace. Erected by Gyula Papp and Ferenc Szabolcs 1910-1912 in an eclectic style.

Monuments

  • Lajos Kossuth. de Kossuth et Udvard (1802-1894), lawyer, politician and one of the leaders of the Hungarian uprising of independence against Austria from 1848/49. Sculptor Gyula Bethlen.
  • Fountain with three graces. Made of bronze on Kossuth Square, artist Tibor Borbás.
  • First World War Memorial, in the park in front of the county seat. Erected in 1928 by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl. The main character is a hero fighting a dragon, the two subgroups symbolized the beginning of the fight and the end.
  • Pro Patria Mortui. Memorial to the 12,000 victims of World War II, erected in 1991.
  • The Hungarian hussar. Bronze statue in honor of the hussar regiment that lived in the city from 1869-1944.
  • Memorial plaque for Count János Esterházy (1901-1957). Member of the Esterházy family, politician of the Hungarian minority in Czechoslovakia and the First Slovak Republic.
