Uzhhorod (Ukrainian Uzhgorod; also Uzhgorod, Uzhhorod, Uzgorod; Hungarian Ungvár, Slovak Užhorod) is the capital of Zakarpattia Oblast in the extreme West of Ukraine, right on the border with Slovakia.

background

The Mediterranean-looking city is one of the oldest Ukrainian cities. The eventful recent history of the city can also be clearly seen in the cityscape: until 1918 part of the Hungarian Kingdom (or Austria-Hungary), then until 1939 part of the Czecho-Slovak Republic and from then on part of the Soviet Union. In the city center there are magnificent, eclectic buildings of the Hungarian Art Nouveau next to the functional, simple buildings of the Czechoslovak interwar modernism and the large-volume apartment blocks of the Soviet era. A very interesting mixture and a history lesson from the last 120 years that you can simply work through while taking a walk.

Uzhhorod is the bishopric of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic eparchat Mukachevo, which has 380,000 believers in the Zakarpattia Oblast. It is subordinate to the Pope in Rome, but celebrates its services according to the Eastern (Byzantine) rite, similar to the Orthodox. This rite church was founded in 1646 by the Union of Uzhhorod (or Ungvár) when 63 Orthodox priests from the Carpathian Ukraine, then part of Hungary, decided to recognize the Pope as head. Theodor Romscha, who was Greek Catholic Bishop of Mukachevo / Uzhhorod from 1944, was poisoned by the Soviet secret service NKVD in 1947. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II, and his relics are in the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross.

Uzhhorod has been a university city since 1945. Around 13,600 students are enrolled at the Uzhhorod National University.
