Miskolc is a city of north ofHungary.

To know

Major city ofNorthern Hungary, Miskolc was an important center of heavy industry since the times of Habsburg rule. Many of its plants were closed immediately after the fall of the communist regime with dramatic effects on the local economy such as the dizzying increase in unemployment and the decrease of the population. The first signs of recovery date back to the year 2,000 thanks to the establishment of European multinationals in cities.

Miskolc is today a tourist town. Its historic center has less interest than its neighbor Eger but on the other hand it boasts attractions of primary importance in its immediate surroundings such as the Tapolca thermal park which offers the unique experience of bathing in a natural pool inside a cave. Also very close is the pretty village of Lillafüred and its famous Hotel Palace from the 1930s, nestled in a green valley of the Bukk mountains.

Miskolc is also a hub for rail and road transport and consequently allows for a greater number of excursions in theNorthern Hungary that does not Eger.

Miskolc is also renowned for its university with about thirty faculties, from industrial and mechanical engineering to that of Fine Arts. Approximately 15,000 students attend courses.

When to go

Miskolc is a valid destination all year round although the winter months, and in particular January, can have temperatures that drop to twenty degrees below zero at night. On average Miskolc receives around 120 centimeters of snow per year and frequently the snow turns into icy layers. Summers are cool and basically humid with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees and more.

How to orient yourself

Heroes' square (Hősök tere) is the fulcrum of the center (belváros). It overlooks the church of the Minorites flanked by the former monastery of the order and the beautiful building of the "Földes Ferenc" gymnasium.

South of Heroes' square runs Széchenyi István street, the main city artery that crosses the whole center in the sense of latitude. It constitutes a pedestrian area but the trams have the right to pass through it together with private vehicles for the loading / unloading of goods only. Among the noteworthy buildings that surround it, the "Zborovszky house", a beautiful one-storey building at no. 18, currently home to the tourist office.

Elizabeth Square opens up along the Széchenyi István route (Erzsébet tér) of elongated shape. The square was redesigned after the flood of 1878. Among the eclectic-style buildings that surround it, the building known as "Elisabetta's baths", no longer in operation, stands out. At No. 2 is the former pharmacy "the golden deer" (Arany Szarvas).

A couple of blocks east of the Heroes' square is the Piazza del Grano (Búza tér) with the suburban bus station, the large covered market (13,000 m²), completely renovated in 2008 and the Greek Catholic church, awarded the title of cathedral in 2011.

Neighborhoods

In addition to the center (belváros) described above, Miskolc still boasts a couple of neighborhoods with tourist interest:

  • Tapolca - The suburb 4.8 km south of the center where the entrance to the thermal bath complex is located, the main tourist attraction of Miskolc. It has a high concentration of hotels of different categories.
  • Diósgyőr - Former industrial suburb, about 6 km east of the center, Diósgyőr is famous for the castle of the same name and also because the cogwheel train departs from here and goes into the green valleys of the Bukk mountains, touching the tourist resort of Lillafüred.

L’Huillier-Coburg Palace ad Edelény
  • 4 Edelény (25 km north of Miskolc, half an hour by train) - Town where the L’Huillier-Coburg palace is located, one of the most interesting examples of early Baroque architecture in Hungary. It was built between 1716 and 1730 by Jean-Francois L'Huillier, a native of France. The subsequent owner of the palace was Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, lieutenant general of the Austro-Hungarian army. The palace was not used by the new owner and began to decline. It suffered serious damage in 1945, when a Soviet military command settled there and made improper use of the building. For example, a room decorated with remarkable frescoes was used as a chicken coop. Large-scale restorations were initiated in 2001 on the initiative of the national superintendent of historic monumentsHungary. Info on timetables and visits on the site palace officer.
  • 5 Lillafüred (15 km west of Miscolk, reachable not only by VOLÁN buses, but also by a cogwheel train) - Renowned tourist resort in the Bukk mountains famous for its Hotel Palace built in 1930 in the style of the Hungarian Renaissance castles and for the hanging gardens between the Szinva and Garadna streams.
