Szombathely is a city in Hungarian County Vas.

The forerunner of Szombathely was the ancient city of Savaria. This was founded around 43 AD by the Roman Emperor Claudius. Back then, the veterans were here Legio XV Apollinaris including family members, merchants and traders are also said to have been there. The foundation is related to the consolidation of Pannonia, Szombathely is next to Emona (Ljubljana/Slovenia) and Scarbantia (Sopron) one of the oldest settlements in the former Pannonia. The place has been continuously inhabited for 2000 years. The city was considered an important transport link on the Amber Road.

Today Szombathely is a lively city, it is the center of economic and cultural life in the Vas region.

By plane

The nearest commercial airports are Sármellék / Balaton (SOB; 90 km southeast), Graz (GRZ; 120 km west) and Vienna (VIE; 135 km north). However, there is no quick and easy public transport connection to Szombathely from any of these airports. From 250 km away Budapest Airport you need at least 3:15 hours by train (change in Zugló and Kelenföld).

By train

Szombathely railway station
  • From Vienna, take the train to Deutschkreuz from the main station or Meidling and get on Sopron around to Szombathely (travel time 2:40 hours).
  • Of Graz From there you drive to Szentgotthárd and change there to the train to Szombathely (2:45 hours).
  • Of Budapest there are direct intercity buses to Szombathely every two hours (via Székesfehérvár and Veszprém). The tickets cost between 1,700 and 2,700 HUF and the journey takes a good 2½ hours.

In the street

  • From Budapest and Gyor via the M85 bis Csorna and there change to the M86, which leads to Szombathely. The approx. 220 km drive from Budapest takes a good two hours.
  • From Vienna via the A2 to the node Guntramsdorf, then continue on the A3 to the node Eisenstadt, continue over the S31 over Mattersburg to Oberpullendorf. At the border crossing in Rattersdorf /Koszeg one reaches Hungary, after another 23 km Szombathely. In total, it is around 135 km from Vienna to Szombathely, for which you should plan around 1:45 hours of travel time.
  • Alternatively: from the Eisenberg junction continue on the B16 towards Sopron / Ödenburg, from there on the Hungarian main road 84 to Hegyfalu and there on the M86 motorway, which leads to Szombathely.
  • From southern Germany there is also an approach via Graz from there on via the A2 to the Lafnitztal / Oberwart exit, from Oberwart on the B 63 via Schachendorf / Bucsu to Szombathely (Graz – Szombathely: 125 km / 1½ hours).
