Graz Airport

The Graz-Thalerhof Airport (official name) is about ten kilometers south of the Graz city center and is the fourth largest airport in Austria.

background

The airport is located on the area with the remains of a luxurious Roman villa that was partially excavated in the 1930s and is almost 2,000 years old Bukovina and Galicia, which were then suspected of "Russophilia". There was a lack of space and catastrophic sanitary conditions in the camp, which resulted in multiple epidemics. During the four years of its existence, almost 1,800 people died in the Thalerhof camp.

The construction work for a military airport near Graz and still on behalf of the dual monarchy Austria-Hungary began in 1913, the first flight on the new airfield took place on June 26, 1914. After the end of the First World War, when military and civil aviation were initially banned, the airport was taken over by the civil government of Styria in 1920, and then from 1922 by the state of Austria.

From 1925 the civil flight network in Austria was established, in 1937 a terminal building was built.

During the Second World War, the airport was used exclusively for military purposes, after the end of the war it was occupied by the Russians from 1945, and civilian operations only began again from 1951.
