Hegyeshalom (German: Strass-Sommerein, Croatian: Štruos, Smierna) is a municipality in the county Győr-Moson-Sopron, Border town with Austria and an important regional transport hub. Before the expansion of the Schengen area to Hungary in 2007, the Hegyeshalom-Nickelsdorf motorway border crossing was one of the busiest in the world.

background

The settlement was first mentioned in 1217. After the Turkish wars in the 16th and 17th centuries, the community was settled by Germans who made up the majority of the population until World War II. Most of them were resettled in 1945 and 1946.

The place gained great importance with the construction of the railway line Vienna-Gyor 1863 and subsequently from railway lines Bratislava and Csorna. After the assignment of the Burgenland from Hungary to Austria in 1921, Hegyeshalom became a border town for rail and road.

In Hegyeshalom, work began to dismantle the Iron Curtain between Austria and Hungary. Originally, the fence was removed due to the need for renovation - Hungary did not have the money for a new building. The first segments were removed on May 2, 1989, but two months later it became a symbolic state act. For the media-effective severing by the Foreign Ministers of Austria and Hungary, Gyula Horn and Alois Mock, were close to Sopron legend has it that a few meters of fence were rebuilt.

Nevertheless, every train - including international long-distance trains - still stops in the relatively insignificant Hegyeshalom. The passport controls were dropped, but the change in personnel on the train continued.

In the course of the refugee movements in summer / autumn 2015, the border crossing at Hegyeshalom was severely restricted at times. The situation relaxed by spring 2016 and is now possible again without any problems.
