The town Gerolzhofen lies on the northwestern edge of the Steigerwalds in Lower Franconia and has a well-preserved medieval old town.
background
The first settlements near Gerolzhofen can be traced back to the Bronze Age through archaeological finds. The first mention is dated between 750 and 779, a "Geroltshove in Folcfelden" is in a deed of donation to the monastery Fulda mentioned.
The name is interpreted as the court of "Gerold" from the name Gerwalt, which is in Germanic the javelin thrower (Ger for point), or derived from the old Franconian noble clan of the Gerolds. It was first mentioned as a city in 1345.
In the Middle Ages, the fate of Gerolzhofen was quite changeable: in the Franconian City War (1397-1400) the imperial freedom that had only recently been achieved was lost and from then on the city was part of Würzburg, in the Peasants' War (1525), in the Markgräfler Krieg (1552) and in the thirty-year-old During the war, Gerolzhofen was plundered several times.

The next quickly accessible train station is Schweinfurt, continue by bus or taxi.
Gerolzhofen is a station at the Steigerwaldbahn, a branch line from Kitzingen to Schweinfurt. The route was taken over by the Bavarian Regional Railway (BRE), it is closed to train traffic due to suspected contaminated sites from the Second World War, but is to be reopened.
