background

The place was first mentioned in 918 as "Wiesenheida".

Wiesentheid was granted market rights on March 15, 1682 by Johann Otto von Dernbach. After Otto's death, his widow Eleonore married Count Rudolf Franz Erwein von Schönborn. He chose Wiesentheid as the family seat of the Schönborns and developed a brisk building activity. Under him the residence and the baroque buildings were created.

The independent political community of Wiesentheid was created in 1818 as part of the Bavarian administrative reform. Until 1972 Wiesentheid belonged to the district of Gerolzhofen, which was dissolved during the regional reform in Bavaria; since then Wiesentheid has been assigned to the district of Kitzingen.
