Münsterschwarzach Abbey

1  Münsterschwarzach Abbey

The first monastery was founded around the year 780 and as a nunnery consecrated to the Mother of God Maria, a first monastery church was consecrated in 788. Around the year 877 the monastery was taken over by the Benedictines as "Monasterium Suarzaha".

In the High Middle Ages, the monastery experienced its first heyday, around 1066 an early Romanesque basilica was built. The monastery complex was then destroyed in the Thirty Years War, after the end of the war the monastery experienced a second boom in the 18th century.

In 1743 a huge baroque basilica was built as a dome and according to plans by Balthasar Neumann. In 1803 the monastery was dissolved in the process of secularization, the Neumann church building was damaged by lightning in 1810 and completely demolished in 1825.

It was not until 1913 that the Benedictines took over the remains of the monastery again and built a new abbey church according to plans by Albert Boßlet. It was inaugurated in 1938 and the interior is kept quite simple.

The abbey still has a total of 150 monks, around a third of whom work in missions (= "field service"). Best known name is Anselm Green, as the author of numerous spiritual books, probably the most widely read Christian author of our day and, as a course leader for seminars, meditation and fasting, also one of the most well-known religious in the entire German-speaking and European region.
