The market town Abtswind lies on the edge of the Lower Franconian part of Steigerwalds in Bavaria and is part of the administrative community Wiesentheid.

background

Originally the place goes back to a settlement of the Slavic Wends. These first settled near the Eichsee and were then driven out by the Franks, who continued this settlement. In the course of conversion to Christianity, a chapel was built here, which was connected to the Münsterschwarzach monastery. Over the centuries, the place moved to the current position. Finds of a bell and dead bones around 200 years ago prove the old location. In 783 the name was given Abbatissa winds mentioned for the first time. He means to the abbot's turns. The Münsterschwarzach monastery was probably involved in the establishment of the village and was the local ruler until the 15th century. But other gentlemen also acquired shares in the small town, so that in the next few centuries it was primarily the lords of the Counts of Castell, the Ebrach monastery and the Freiherr Fuchs von Dornheim who ruled the village. In the following years, the place was not spared from the persecution of witches, the plague and the Thirty Years War. But the community was able to recover again and again thanks to the basis of agriculture and good relationships with the neighboring communities. This should also apply to the following crises up to the Second World War. During this time even evacuated or bombed out residents were made Dusseldorf, Wurzburg or Kitzingen quartered in place.
