background

The first written mention of the place is in the year 906 as "Folchaa inferior". In that year the settlement was donated to the Fulda monastery. 1258 is the first documented mention as a city. 1520 Transfer of the city to the possession of the prince-bishops of Würzburg. After the Congress of Vienna, Volkach fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814. During the territorial reform in 1972, 10 localities are incorporated, Volkach becomes the old district with the dissolution of the old district Gerolzhofen in the county Kitzingen incorporated.

Today they still belong to Volkach Districts Drive Gaibach, Krautheim, Obervolkach, Astheim, Escherndorf (with the hamlet of Köhler), Hallburg, Dimbach, Eichfeld and Rimbach.

Volkacher Mainschleife

The Main loop near Volkach is the largest meandering river landscape in Bavaria. The Main begins with a large and almost closed loop around the river Vogelsburg as the Umlaufberg and as the peninsula in the interior of the loop. By cutting the course of the river, which began around 3 to 7 million years ago, a system of impact and sliding slopes was created on the river bank with an extremely favorable microclimate for viticulture.

Since 2008, the Volkacher Mainschleife with the Vogelsburg has been part of the project that was restarted in 2002 "Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes"(Bavarian State Office for the Environment) counted.

Because of its strategic importance, the Vogelsburg was fortified in prehistoric times, as evidenced by finds as far back as the Paleolithic. Today is here that monastery with a monastery church and an excursion restaurant.

By train

Volkach itself is no longer approached by the train. The nearest train stations are in Seligenstadt (10 kilometers away; the train station is served hourly by regional trains that run between Würzburg and Schweinfurt; the official station name is Seligenstadt near Würzburg), Kitzingen (approx. 20 km away) and Schweinfurt (approx. 23 km away).

For several decades, Volkach was the terminus of the 10 kilometer “Main Loop Railway” from Seligenstadt; it was a non-electrified, single-track branch line of the Würzburg - Schweinfurt railway line. Regular passenger traffic was discontinued in 1968 and the line was closed in 1994. After the shutdown, however, one established itself society, which has been offering trips for excursion traffic on summer weekends again for several years. However, the whole route is no longer used. In Seligenstadt, the switch was expanded by the Deutsche Bahn so that the platform of the Mainschleifenbahn is a little north of the actual station. In Volkach, at the other end of the line, there was a combined road / rail bridge to the Volkach Main side until 2011. This bridge was still in use for road traffic, but the trains were no longer allowed to use it. After the opening of the new Main Bridge in autumn 2011, the old combi bridge was demolished. This means that the last part of the route to the old Volkach railway station is structurally lost and the Mainschleifenbahn rail bus now has its permanent terminus in Volkach-Astheim (around 700 meters from the city center). In the period from May to October, several journeys are offered on Sundays, sometimes also on Saturdays, with connections to DB trains in Seligenstadt.

Tourist Attractions

Vogelsburg

The Vogelsburg is the central one inside the Main loop The resulting mountain, at a height of 262 meters, rises around 70 meters above the surrounding area (approx. 192 m) and the water level of the Main. The strategically important mountain has been settled and fortified since prehistory.

The Vogelsburg is first mentioned in a document in the year 874. At that time it was a royal estate and a refuge for the Carolingians, the name is derived from "Vugalisburg", for Fliehburg. In 906 the Vogelsburg was transferred to the Fulda Monastery given away, in the 13th century most of the Fulda property on the Main came to the Count of Castell. The Vogelsburg complex was handed over to the Würzburg Carmelites by Count Hermann II von Castell in 1282, with the subsequent establishment of the monastery. Viticulture by the monks is documented as early as the 15th century.

The monastery was sacked in 1525 during the Franconian Peasants' War, only the late Gothic choir remained of the church. During the secularization in 1803 the monastery was dissolved and sold to private customers. In 1895 the Würzburg privateer Josef Walter bought the Vogelsburg and built an excursion restaurant. The privateer bequeathed the monastery facilities to his daughter, who in 1957 handed over the facilities to the community of the Augustine Sisters, who then took over the Vogelsburg in 2011 Juliusspital Foundation in Wurzburg assigned. The Augustine Sisters run a religious meeting place in the monastery.

With a unique location in the vineyards, with a wide view of the surrounding area and surrounded by the Main the Vogelsburg with the monastery and the Vogelsburg tavern is an extremely popular excursion destination.

Archaeological excavations are currently taking place, after which a general renovation with renovation and new hotel and conference rooms is planned. The inn has been closed since October 2013, and the reopening is planned for summer 2015.

The station pictures of the pilgrimage to the church were made in the 19th century. The chancel was redesigned in 2002 and, with its modern altarpiece and the simple design of the celebration altar and choir, offers an interesting contrast to the elements of traditional Marian veneration in the rest of the nave, which is dominated by the Riemenschneider Madonna enthroned in the middle in front of and above the chancel.Open: March Fri-Sun 10 am-5pm, April-Oct. daily 10 am-5pm, Nov. trips

  • The so-called "Wine Island" is located directly southwest of Volkach. This island was created by shortening an arch of the Main through the Main Canal, so that the two well-known wine-growing locations Sommerach and Nordheim am Main are now in fact on an island. On the Weininsel, the two elevated viewpoints in the vineyards are worth a visit, because from there you have a wide view of the area around the Mainschleife.
  • A few kilometers south of Volkach lies Schwarzach am Main with the well-known Benedictine abbey Münsterschwarzach.
