Iphofen is a center of the Franconia in the state of Bavaria

To know

Iphofen lies at the foot of the Steigerwald in the Bassa Franconia and is a destination for ecological tourism. Its origins are medieval and there are towers and fortifications from the time that give greater interest to the village.

The fame of Iphöfer wines is based on local factors such as the geological composition of the soil, rich in carbon and gypsum minerals, the microclimate and the sun exposure of the vineyards.

Silvaner is the wine made from white grapes. It takes its name from Transylvania, the region of today Romania whence it was imported. It is a unique wine in the whole Germany

Other varieties include Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Rieslaner, Traminer, Muller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Bacchus and Pinot Noir

The cultivated lands occupy an extension of 290 hectares. The production of red wines has increased considerably in recent years. This is mainly due to the rise in temperatures caused by the greenhouse effect.

Background

The first mention of the village dates back to 741 AD. C. In 1293 Iphofen was elevated to the rank of city. It belonged to the bishop Würzburg named Julius. At the time it was already a thriving center of viticulture. We also know that he had a hospital and a hospice for the poor.

Iphofen did not escape the scourge of the plague that repeatedly struck Europe between the 16th and 17th centuries. He suffered a lot during the Thirty Years War.

In the following centuries Iphofen prospered not only thanks to viticulture but also to the extraction of gypsum. The phylloxera disease that affected European grape varieties in the early 20th century resulted in a temporary decline in viticulture. A few decades later, Iphofen also established itself as a tourist center.
