A "Main crossing" with an associated settlement on Vogelsberg is suspected earlier, the place name Escherndorf appears in 1316 as Villa Eschrichsdorf and in 1422 as Eschersdorff. From 1540 the two Häckerdörfer Escherndorf and Köhler belonged to the Hochstift Würzburg and became part of Bavaria after the secularization in 1814. Wine

Escherndorf is still in the valley floor and on the north side of the Main, directly behind the village are the slopes of Vogelberg. The slopes, which are up to 70 degrees steep, are curved on the inside of the Main loop, protected from cold winds to the north and open like a concave mirror or amphitheater to the south. The floors consist of shell limestone with a lime-marl clay layer. These particularly favorable conditions for viticulture made the high-quality wines from Escherndorf known far beyond the region as early as the 19th century, and one of the fans was Goethe. Today these environmental conditions are marketed as "terroir".

The vineyards of Escherndorf are Lump, Fürstenberg and Berg. The vineyard in the village of Köhler is the Neusetz Glatze. Above all, the Franconian grape variety Silvaner and also the Müller-Thurgau, but also Riesling, Bacchus and other white and red wine varieties. The specialty in Escherndorf are the noble sweet wines such as Spätlese, Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslesen / Silvanereiswein, definitely not "cheap": Beerenauslesen are around € 35 for 0.5 liters, but "still affordable" compared to other regions. There are a good dozen wineries in total, and various reviews have ranked them among the best in Germany.

In the wineries there is wine sales with wine tastings and, on various occasions, tastings.
