Hassfurt is a city on Main and lies on the edge of the Hatred Mountains in the eastern Lower Franconia. The place is also the district town of the district named after the low mountain range. The place name becomes with a short a spoken as with hatred, but historically has just as little to do with hatred as with the hare in the local coat of arms, but with fog.

Haßfurt was first mentioned in a document in 1230, has had city rights since 1243 and belonged to the Würzburg monastery until the secularization in 1802. Then the city and the Lower Franconia region became part of Bavaria. The two towers originally built in the 13th century still characterize the largely undamaged cityscape.

  • 7 Freezing tower , the late medieval tower at the harbor was renovated in 2010 and is used by the water watch.
  • 8 Historic Main Mill, built in 1430. Here, the Main has been dammed by a weir since 1430 in order to bring enough power to the mill wheels even when the water level is low. In the 16th century the mill was expanded and grinded with 8 gears. In 1840, the grinding operation was stopped to facilitate river navigation. The renovated building has been used by the Volksbildungswerk for adult education since 2000.

Haßfurt lies between several famous wine-growing areas. The closest, about 5 km east, are the vineyards that are at Line start. To the south of Haßfurt lies the Steigerwald with numerous hiking opportunities. The well-preserved half-timbered town is one of the attractions to the north Koenigsberg. Sightseeing flights can be chartered at the small Haßfurt airport.
