background
history
Archaeological finds in the community from the Mesolithic period testify to human settlement as early as 6000–4000 BC. Various finds were also made from the Bronze and Iron Ages, plus the find of a grave from the urn field culture.
1018 | First written mention as a large farm called "Curtis Zilin" dem Michelsberg Monastery in Bamberg was given. |
before 1139 | First mention of fortified buildings on today's Kapellenberg |
1379 | The place is named as a city for the first time when the Bamberg bishop gave permission to build a defensive wall. |
1421 | First evidence of the Zeil city coat of arms |
1616-1631 | A witch-hunting court is established (see Witch tower) |
1814 | Zeil is now part of Bavaria |
1852 | The place is connected to the rail network. |
The Second World War did not leave Zeil without a trace. The local NSDAP group was founded as early as 1927. In April 1945, phosphorus bombs were dropped by the American army. The Main Bridge was blown up by the National Socialists as the last to stand up. On April 12th, 1945 the city surrendered and the city was handed over to the Americans. The 1950s and 1960s were marked by the industrial boom. The sugar factory (up to 500 employees in the heyday) was built as well as a furniture factory (with up to 1500 employees).[1]
The anniversary was in 2018 "1000 years of the city of Zeil" celebrated.
Districts
Zeil am Main is part of the Haßberge Nature Park and consists of 7 districts:
- A. Bischofsheim
- B. Krum
- C. Schmachtenberg
- D. Sechsthal
- E. Willow mill

dialect
Linguistically, the region around Zeil belongs to the dialect of East Franconian. In Zeil the Main is called "Maa", in the nearby Augsfeld and Knetzgau but "Mee". The difference is based on the fact that there is a dialect border immediately west of Zeil.
Little anecdote: According to the vernacular, you stand up to Zeil the Baa in the Maa, and from Zeil with the Bee in the sea (stand with your feet in the main).

Zeil am Main
The following points 1 to 12 describe a short tour of approx. 1.5 km of the most important sights in Zeil's old town. The starting and ending point is the marketplace.
1 Zeil market square. the "good room" Surrounded by its well-preserved and restored half-timbered houses is an old town that is well worth seeing. The half-timbered houses, mostly listed, are dominated by the town hall and the parish church. The
2 historical town hall, Marketplace 8. with an early Gothic ground floor from the 14th century and the half-timbered structure from 1540, still dominates the town houses today. On the corner of the market square is the pillory and the Bamberg Elle unit. The
3 Catholic parish church of St. Michael, Church square 1. The church contains remains of the previous building from the 14th century, but in its current appearance it reflects different building eras up to the 18th century. It is worth seeing, among other things. the valuable ceiling painting with the stucco work and the two late Gothic wooden figures St. Stephanus and St. Urban (around 1500). Immediately behind the town hall you enter the courtyard of the
4 Anna Chapel. The former cemetery chapel is from the beginning of the 15th century. The basement served as an ossuary until 1938. The courtyard in front of the parish church, which is still enclosed today, was the cemetery until 1713. That is why the small late Gothic is located here
5 Half-timbered house on Marktplatz 4. Due to the construction of the beams, it is assumed that it was built in the second half of the 15th century. The unusual facade reveals the different architectural styles. In the windows and the 4 entrances you will find the architectural styles of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo. Next to the old town hall is the largest and oldest
6 Jörg Hofmann House, Main street 3. a half-timbered house, richly decorated with carved faces (to avert the evil eye). The house was designed by the Zeil carpenter of the same name Jörg Hofmann built in 1689. This is just a few steps away from the market square
7 Witch tower, Obere Torstrasse 14. Tel.: 49 9524 949861. Zeil was a big venue in the 17th century Witch hunts, over 400 so-called "witches" were burned at that time. Information on this topic will be provided at the original location.Open: March 15 to October 31: Thu to Sun 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., public holidays 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.Price: adults € 3, schoolchildren € 2. If you look up Obere Torstrasse from the Jörg-Hofman-Haus, your gaze falls on the
8 Propstenhof, Obere Torstrasse 8. The property was first mentioned in a deed of foundation in 1196. The area is therefore closely linked to the founding history of the city. The current building was completed by a stone mason from Zeil in 1706. Right across from the Hexenturm is the
9 Former Schönborn’s hunting lodge. Now the seat of the tax office. The three-wing early baroque building was built by Lothar Franz von Schönborn built between 1695 and 1710. In the inner courtyard there is a stair tower and in the immediate vicinity there is a small entrance door with the prince-bishop's coat of arms. The rear of the hunting lodge borders on the south-western front of the 14th century city wall and the only roofed city wall tower. A passage in the reconstructed Baroque ornamental garden leads to the moat gardens and the city lake in the silted-up moat. From the Propstenhof you have a beautiful view of the opposite
10 City wall view. If you follow the path through the gardens, you have a beautiful view of Schönborn's hunting lodge and part of the city fortifications. The medieval city wall and the former towers are partially preserved in different places around the old town. As the only large city tower that is "Upper Gate" from the 15th century and is now known as the Witches Tower (see above). After a few steps you reach the Grabengarten passage to the city wall path and see the other side of the city wall with some shell towers.
11 To old Freyung, Speiersgasse 21. The elongated building consists of two parts: the one on the left "Old Freyung" from the 16th century, to the right of it the restaurant building with the beer garden behind. The Göller Brewery with brewing and licensing rights since 1514 is located in the inner courtyard of the Freyung building. The restaurant extension dates from 1920, the eastern wall of which runs parallel to the city wall. If you walk from the Altach Bridge along the Altach stream of the same name, which runs parallel to the city wall here, you will reach the only surviving former pedestrian passage in the city wall. Only a few steps behind you can reach Speiergasse and see the listed building complex
If you look up from the brewery into the 12 Speiergasse wander, you can see the former synagogue and Jewish school with the preserved Torah joiner's bay right across the street at Speiersgasse 18. On the way back to the market square, several half-timbered houses that are well worth seeing line the way to the left and right of Speiersgasse.
13 Zeiler Käppele, Kapellenberg, Zeil am Main. or also known as the Catholic Marienkapelle, is located on the Kapellenberg above the old town of Zeil and is a well-known place of pilgrimage. From the chapel you have a beautiful view of the old town of Zeil, the Main Plain and the Steigerwald. The

16 Dreiländerstein (northwest of Bischofsheim). This is where the border ran between the Diocese of Bamberg, the Diocese of Würzburg and the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha.
Krum
It is worth taking a short walk through the OT Krum, which was first documented in 1245. In 1348 the 17 Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul First mentioned, the late baroque nave is dated to 1758. It is the oldest exemplary renovated house 18 former shepherd's house (around 1700) in the suburb 9. In the immediate vicinity is St. John of Nepomuk (1885), carved in sandstone.
Schmachtenberg

On foot from the old town / market square (approx. 2.3 km) in the direction of OT Schmachtenberg, ascent on the north loop of the upper Abt-Degen wine hiking trail and on to the so-called Eselssteig. By car towards Bischofsheim, after the parking lot of the Zeiler Käppele keep right, turn into the farm roads and walk about 5 minutes across the green meadow. From the ruins of the south wall you have a wide view over the Main Plain with the quarry ponds and over into the Steigerwald and the Pilgrimage Church of Maria Limbach. The medieval Hussite

Abt-Degen-Steig
The Abt-Degen-Steig between the OT Schmachtenberg and the Ebelsbacher OT Steinbach, goes back to the abbot Alberich sword of Cistercian monastery Ebrach who was born in Zeil in 1625. The abbot did the in 1665 Silvaner-Vine introduced in Franconia. For this he was set up a memorial in the Zeiler Kapellenberg 21 Abbot sword statue and in 1995 the wine trail named after him was opened. The area between Ziegelanger and Steinbach is also that Pfaffenberg nature reserve.
The path extends over different plateaus on the slope. Location boards along the way from Schmachtenberg to Ziegelanger and Steinbach provide information about geology and the cultural history of wine in the partly medieval vineyards. Not only Hedgerows, but also the 22 Vintner's stairs , the 23 "Ziegelangerer Face House" , the Schmachtenburg ruins and the Zeiler Käppele can be reached via the steep path.
Wine-growing region
The entire vineyard area of the municipality is 24.1 hectares and is located in the wine-growing region Abbot Degen wine valley, formerly also known as the Steigerwald wine-growing region. The vineyards extend
- in Zeil via the Pfarrerspflöckn and Mönchshang locations
- in the OT Krum about the location of the Kingdom of Heaven
- in OT Schmachtenberg about the location Eulengrund and
- in the OT Ziegelanger about the location Ölschnabel.
The grape varieties Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Bacchus, Kerner, Scheurebe, Pinot Blanc and the red varieties Black Riesling, Domina and Pinot Noir are grown.
We recommend a hike over the vineyards along the abovementioned Abt-Degen-Steig or a visit to the famous Zeiler Weinfest (see events). Definitely not to visit one of the many Hedge and wine taverns miss and try the wine from the different locations.
Adventure trail near Ziegelanger
The 24 Mainauen nature discovery trail of the LIFE-Nature project extends on both sides of the Main from Hassfurt to Dippach or Stettfeld. A partial area of 800 m lies between the OT Ziegelanger and the Main. It is a former sand pit in the oaks from the time between 8,000 BC. And 250 AD (see picture on the right). They are unique in this accumulation and presentation. Information boards on the circular route explain the different habitats past a sand swallow nest wall, sandy grassland and an artificially created oxbow lake. The development stages of a riparian forest are shown. Diverse bird watching are possible. Access by car via the B26 bypass, parking is available on site. By bike or on foot along the Main Cycle Path or from Ziegelanger over the railway bridge.
