Subsequently, the castle was a typical Ganerbeburg, it was inhabited by eight families at the end of the 13th century, each with their own kemenaten (residential buildings). Coexistence in the castle was regulated in the so-called castle peace treaties.

The entire castle was always endangered during its lifetime by the shifts in the rock / sandstone under the foundations of the castle, various components even collapsed or were damaged, until the 16th century it was repeatedly added and rebuilt.

Birkenfeld Castle

Birkenfeld Castle

4 The facility in Birkenfeld has its origins as an estate and as a former moated castle on the old country road from Bamberg to Meiningen, starting in the 14th century. The domain had been in the possession of the von Hutten family since 1475, as was their family seat. The first imperial knight and philosopher came from the noble family Ulrich von Hutten, an early advocate of the Enlightenment and Protestantism.

Today's Birkenfeld Castle as a late baroque complex in the style of an Italian villa was built between 1738 and 1753 under the builder Johann Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hutten and according to plans by the architect Johann David Steingruber. Johann Franz Gout from Berlin designed the stucco work and fresco paintings, and the complex was finally completed in 1775. The palace complex is one of the most important of the 18th century, at least for Franks.

The manor complex includes the main building and several farm buildings, the building fabric has remained largely intact. Birkenfeld Castle has been owned by the von Ortenburg family since the 19th century and was extensively renovated between 1992 and 2000.

The palace complex is used privately by the lords of the palace and also serves as a hostel, see section accommodation.

Directions Via the B279 and junction in the village of Ermershausen, continue for about 2 km to Birkenfeld.
