Eltmann is a small town on the south bank of the Mains on the northern edge of the Steigerwaldes in the district Hatred Mountains in Lower Franconia. The place has numerous historical buildings. Around the market square the town hall, the former district court and the parish church. The many listed houses in the city center and the partially preserved old city wall invite you to take a walk. The preserved tower of the Wallburg towers high above the town. Particularly worth seeing is that of Balthasar Neumann built pilgrimage church "Visitation of the Virgin Mary" in the OT Limbach.

Eltmann was first used as a "castellum munitissimum" (very well fortified castell) mentioned. The place, also called "castellum altimoin" (Castell am Main), was known at the end of the 8th century by Count Gumbertus dem Diocese of Würzburg assigned and is therefore regarded as one of the original parishes of the diocese.
At the suggestion of the bishop Hermann II. Became 1335 by emperor Ludwig the Bavarian the town was granted city rights. During the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648) Eltmann and the surrounding villages had to endure looting and troop marches over and over again. The Main Bridge was destroyed several times during this time. More fighting during the Napoleonic Wars the city had to endure in 1796 when the French revolutionary army under General Jourdan encountered imperial troops.
In 1814 Eltmann became Bavarian, and in 1835 the foundation stone for the new parish church was laid due to the "600th anniversary of the city".
In 2010 the "675 years of the city uprising" were celebrated.

3 Ebelsbach-Eltmann train station, Bahnhofstrasse, 97500 Ebelsbach. The regional train station is in the neighboring municipality Ebelsbach with connections to the next two larger train stations Bamberg or. Wurzburg and their IC / ICE connections. The station is on the railway line Wurzburg - Bamberg and is a stop only for regional trains (RB).

mobility
Many of the sights can be easily reached on foot within the main town of Eltmann. Most of the shops and restaurants can be found along or near Schottenstrasse, Mainstrasse and the market square. The districts of Limbach, Eschenbach, Dippach and Roßstadt are connected to Eltmann via the Main cycle path. The districts can be reached in a few minutes by car or by public transport VGN Transport association for the greater Nuremberg area. However, public transport can only be used to a very limited extent over short distances between the individual villages.

Dippach
1 Bird sanctuary and gray heron colony observation tower. A bird observation tower was built in 2008 on a Mainal arm between the OT Dippach and the OT Roßstadt in order to observe the approximately 200 pairs of gray herons in the nests of the treetops on the slopes of the Steigerwald. A built-in telescope offers a view of the gray heron colony and the main valley. Image information boards are also available. From the Main Cycle Path, the tower can be reached via a short footpath along an old arm of the Main.

Eltmann
2 town hall, Marktpl. 1, 97483 Eltmann. The historic town hall was built in 1879 based on a design by Jakob Schmitt-Friderich with an ornamental gable, the bay windows with onion dome and figural niches made of sandstone.
The round one stands in front of the town hall 3 Market fountain from 1920 with the sandstone statue of saint John of Nepomuk.
The former 4 District Court, Marketplace 8-10. was an ordinary Bavarian court from 1879 to 1959. Today the building is Eltmann's town hall and is used for performances, concerts and lectures.
5 St. Michael and John the Baptist, Marketplace 12. The Catholic parish church was built from 1835 to 1837 according to a model plan by Leo von Klenze. The substructure of the Gothic tower still preserved today dates from the 13th century.

6 Mount of Olives Chapel, Johannes-Nas-Platz 7. In a small side street, next to the Catholic parish church, is the open late Gothic Ölberg chapel from the 15th century. The group of figures is from the early 16th century.

The ex 8 city wall from the 14th century with a previous total length of 950 m circled the then 5.5 hectare core city. The wall made of ashlar, quarry stone and sandstone is well preserved with some remains of shell towers. See the tour Along the city wall.

The 10 Wallburg tower (also as Herb stew popularly known.), Schlossberg 1. from the 13th century is a remnant of the earlier hill fort above Eltmann. The tower can be climbed and offers a great view of the Haßberge and Steigerwald, as well as over the Main valley. A hoisted flag shows whether the tower is open. Traces of the terrain and the keep have been preserved from the former spur castle.Price: € 1.

11 Mountain chapel, Gallows (Direction Unterschleichach on the St2258). .Open chapel built in memory of the 1st and 2nd World War with a Way of the Cross as a connection to the city. From here you have a beautiful panoramic view of the Main valley.
Limbach
12 Pilgrimage Church of Maria Limbach (Visitation of the Virgin Mary), To the pilgrimage church 23, 97483 Eltmann (OT Limbach). The late baroque church was built from 1751 to 1755 according to the plans of the builder Balthasar Neumann built, whereby the place was known for its pilgrimages since the 15th century. The outer facade has a classicist shape, which is in contrast to the rich interior, such as. B. the Rococo stucco work. The Franconian Marienweg leads past the church.
13 Jewish Cemetery (Jewish dishes). The cemetery, inaugurated in 1714, is located southwest of Limbach in a wooded area with 154 gravestones.

- The Main hiking trail from the source of the Weißmain to the mouth of the Rhine runs through Eltmann.
- The circular route Abt-Degen-Weintal-Radweg (ADW) is 71 km long and crosses the city center of Ebelsbach coming in the direction of Sand am Main (→ Route ADW).
- The long-distance cycle path EuroVelo 4 - Central Europe Route which leads from France to Ukraine, crosses the city.
- The approx. 200 km long Seven Rivers Hiking Trail crosses the city. (→ Seven Rivers Trail)
- Hike through the 14 Mainaue between Eltmann and Haßfurt. The Mainaue is a FFH and bird sanctuary.

Mainstrasse and Schottenstrasse
The 15 Mainstrasse was the main entrance to the city until today's Main Bridge was built and continues straight into the 16 Schottenstrasse. For lovers of history and architecture, it is worth strolling past 11 listed, mostly arable, properties on Mainstrasse and another 8 listed buildings on Schottenstrasse.
Around the market square
Behind the town hall It is worth taking a short detour to Brunnenstrasse past house number 18 17 former inn, to the corner of Brunnenstr. / Dr.-Friedrich-Str. with the School fountain and the 18 former school (now kindergarten). Back to the market square and its fountain past that former district court you can see that across the square at Marktplatz 9 19 former town hall with its beautifully crafted front door and next to it in house number 11 the former one 20 Brewery-Gasthof Lammbräu. A short detour to Dr.-Georg-Schäfer-Str. 1 to the oldest received 21 House from the 16th century. (A remnant of the former city wall can still be seen in the courtyard). Back to the parish church past the restaurant 3 Kronen stands next to the Mount of Olives Chapel the former 22 Benefit house (Johannes-Nas-Platz 7). Right across the street 23 House number 6 one of Eltmann's oldest half-timbered houses from 1649.
Along the city wall
The medieval city wall with its former length of 950 m is still partially preserved and can be hiked around. If you start the circuit at the corner Mainland / Mainstrasse you can already see a short section of the wall here. We continue on the Alte Mauer street. Here the backs of the houses border the Franconian Dreiseithöfe from Mainstrasse to the former city wall. Shortly before Zinkenstrasse, another short section of the wall has been preserved. Straight ahead begins the best-preserved part of the Old wall about 200 m to Schottenstraße. From here you turn into the 24 promenade one with its small park and the Fichtenbach and head towards the playground. The footpath leads past allotment gardens that border the former wall. Follow the narrow path and into Dr.-Georg-Schäfer-Str. turn to house number 9, the 25 Gallery on the city wall. A part of the city wall was exposed on the back of the house inside the gallery. The last remaining piece of wall appears on the Dr.-Georg-Schäfer-Straße 1. From here the long demolished wall can be seen from Brunnenstraße. to Dr.-Friedrich-Str. Direction Main can only be recognized by the lines of houses or wells, like the 26 School fountain.
Up to the Wallburg Tower
The Wallburg tower the former Spornburg can easily be reached by car via Wallburgstr. or the Schloßsteige can be reached. Or you can climb the mountain! The starting point for this is the park at the promenade. Here you cross the Weidengasse and follow the Schloßsteige a short distance. The stone portal appears next to the Schloßsteige 4 residential building with the original figures of a lion and a fox, the heraldic animal of the Fuchs von Bimbach family. If you walk through the historical staircase, you climb steeply over 365 seasons to the tower.
Special tours on the topic of Wallburg can be registered with Burgvogt Reiner Reitz (Association for Local History), Tel. 09522/89 970. On Sundays when the weather is nice, the Eltmann city flag is hoisted, signal that the tower is open to visitors.
