Seehof Castle

lock

The first hunting lodge on the site of the current facility was built in the 15th century, but it was never completely finished. Today's four-wing palace complex was built under the Bamberg prince-bishop Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg from 1687 to 1696 under the supervision of Antonio Petrini.

After secularization, the complex came into private ownership and fell into disrepair, before it was extensively renovated from the end of the 20th century and made accessible to the public again.

Inside the castle, the "White Hall" with the ceiling painting by Giuseppe Appianisi and the showrooms of the restored apartments of the prince-bishops are particularly worth seeing.

The palace building was acquired by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in 1975 and has been used as the official seat of the Bavarian Monument Preservation since then.

Visiting the interior of the castle as part of a guided tour, duration approx. 35 minutes, price € 4.00 (adults; as of 2014).

Orangery

The first orangery was built in 1723. The building was given its present form under Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl from 1733 according to plans by Balthasar Neumann. Heinrich Dientzenhofer was in charge of construction. Today, the Ferdinand Tietz Museum with original sculptures by the sculptor is housed in the western wing of the orangery (freely accessible), while the castle café is located in the eastern wing.

Castle Park

The castle park has an area of 21 hectares and was built in the Rococo style on a hill around the central castle in a terrace structure with a strict division into six rectangular quarters.

Under Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim (1757-79) the cascade (restored in 1995) was built on the south side and the labyrinth, and the garden was originally furnished with 400 sculptures by Ferdinand Tietz, of which only a part has survived. Other elements in the garden are the chestnut alley and the labyrinth.
