background

Map of Koenigsberg in Bavaria

A castle above the city was probably built around 900 to protect and monitor the Rennweg, a trade route across the Haßberge. The founding date of today's facility is certain to be in the year 1168.

The town was founded by Duke Ulrich von Carinthia in 1180, followed by a town history with frequent changes of ownership. During the Reformation the city became Lutheran in 1542 and was then occupied and destroyed several times during the Thirty Years' War by Tilly, commander in chief of the Catholic League troops. Major fire in the city in 1632. In the subsequent reconstruction, today's cityscape was created.

Since 1683 the city belonged to the Duchy of Saxony and was still an evangelical enclave in the all around Catholic Lower Franconia. After a referendum, Königsberg joined Bavaria with the Free State of Coburg in 1920.

Half-timbered houses on the salt market

Belonged to the famous residents of the city Johannes Müller; the important mathematician, astronomer and publisher of the late Middle Ages called himself Regiomontanus (Königsberg in Latin) and Balthasar Düring (Reformer and Lutheran theologian).

Today almost every house in the one and a half square kilometer old town is at least 300 years old: the residents live in a lovingly restored museum, with all the consequences, from the high renovation and maintenance costs of the buildings to the compromises on today's modernity Living quality. In the historic old town, which is a listed building, each half-timbered house has its own story, the rich urban heritage is lovingly preserved, past and present merge into a harmonious whole. A comparison with the much more famous one Rothenburg ob der Tauber is quite permissible, but Königsberg is not yet so overcrowded.

The districts of Königsberg are Altershausen, Hofstetten, Bühl, Dörflis, Hellingen, Holzhausen, Junkersdorf, Köslau, Kottenbrunn, Römershofen and Unfind.
