Kirchheimbolanden is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate. The place is on the eastern slope of the Donnersbergs, at the transition to Upper Rhine Plain

background

Even the place name Kirchheimbolanden seems a bit strange to the stranger. It is actually composed of two words: Kirchheim for the place name, and Bolanden, because the area belonged to those of Bolanden in the Middle Ages. This differentiation from other places with the name Kirchheim in Germany only became necessary in the 19th century. This then became Kirchheim-Bolanden and finally the word Kirchheimbolanden. Nobody uses this tongue twister on site, they just say "Kibo".

The small town briefly formed its own rule in the Middle Ages, when the Bolander property came to a sidelines of those of Sponheim. During this time, in 1368, Kirchheimbolanden also received city rights. The rule finally fell to the House of Nassau, who expanded the town into a residence in the 18th century and also built the castle.

The period as a residence ended with the French Revolution in 1792. In 1816 Kirchheimbolanden fell to Bavaria and became an important administrative center, as can be seen from numerous buildings in the city.

An important date in the history of the city is June 14, 1849. During this time, the Palatinate uprising raged in the whole of the Rhine Palatinate and the irregulars gathered in Kirchheimbolanden to fight against Bavarian rule. When the Prussian overwhelming power moved in, the irregulars fled the place. For unknown reasons, however, a small group stayed behind in the palace garden. In the subsequent battle near Kirchheimbolanden, 50 of the militants were killed, the rest were taken prisoner. A memorial at the entrance to the cemetery reminds of this event to this day.

Kirchheimbolanden is still a center of the otherwise very sparsely populated region of Donnersberg. Tourism is being promoted with great effort, but one cannot speak of a real tourist stronghold for a long time. On the contrary, so far very few strangers have come here.

getting there

By plane

The nearest airport is in Frankfurt am Main. Strangely enough, there are trains from Kirchheimbolanden to Frankfurt Airport during rush-hour traffic, but no trains in the opposite direction from the airport to Kirchheimbolanden. As a rule, it is necessary to take the S-Bahn and then change trains in Mainz Hbf.

By train

Since the 2015 timetable change, Kirchheimbolanden has generally been served directly from Mainz Hbf. Unfortunately the same the timetable More of a guesswork: Sometimes the RE 13 goes to Kirchheimbolanden, sometimes the RB 31, then again neither of the two trains, and the hourly cycle has gaps and shifts so that you cannot remember a specific departure time.

By bus

Kirchheimbolanden is not approached by long-distance buses. However, there are regular bus connections from the nearest train stations in Eisenberg (Palatinate), Monsheim and Rockenhausen, which may be cheaper to get to than the city's train station itself. These buses run at regular intervals and usually also on weekends and public holidays.

What can be confusing for outsiders: the bus stop serves as a hub for bus traffic bus stopbus stop Train station, which is not at the train station. The name still refers to the old train station south of the city, which is no longer used by trains. In contrast, the stop at the train station is called bus stopbus stop Castle garden.

Since then, Kirchheimbolanden has officially been the starting point of this cycle route. The Selztal cycle path continues only in Orbis. You have to cycle to Kirchheimbolanden on your own (not necessarily recommended, as there is a country road without a cycle path).

If you want to see the old town, it's best to park your car in the free one 2 Parking garage, accessible from Uhlandstrasse or Neue Allee. You can park with a parking disc on the upper deck for up to three hours, but there is no limit on the lower deck. There is still the option of parking either by the city wall or directly under Römerplatz. However, due to the numerous one-way streets, it is not easy to get there, let alone out again.

A 1 Motorhome parking space is located in front of the town hall and is signposted from Hitzfeldstrasse. For larger events on the square, however, it may be blocked. A Charging station for e-bikes is also located there. Anyone who breaks down their bike will find one 1 Bicycle tube machine in Neumayerstraße 35 in front of the bike shop.

The city can be explored relatively well on foot. The buses in the city are mostly used for school transport and are not very attractive for tourists.

  • 2  Rococo palace, Schlossstrasse 31. The Baron von Geispitzheim, court marshal of the house of Nassau-Weilburg, had this city palace built in Kirchheimbolanden in the 18th century. Churches

  • 3  Paulskirche. The Paulskirche is the former castle church and, unlike other churches, has no steeple and no bells, so that it looks rather inconspicuous from the outside. The interior design is all the more extensive and at events in the Paulskirche you can admire the so-called Mozart organ from 1745, which the namesake still played himself.
  • 4  Peterskirche, Mozartstrasse 8. The Protestant St. Peter's Church in the old town can be seen from afar. Your tower dates from the 12th century.
  • 5  Catholic Church of St. Peter, Neumayerstraße 3. The Catholic Church of St. Peter was built in the 19th century. It is located high above the old town, which is why there was at times a second Catholic church down in the city; In the meantime, however, it has been torn down due to insufficient occupancy and a row house settlement has been built over it.
  • 6  Church of Our Lady, Liebfrauenstrasse 11. The Liebfrauenkirche dates back to 1731, but it goes back to an older chapel, which was first documented in the 14th century. The church served as a cemetery for the Lutheran congregation for a long time and was not replaced in this function until 1839 by today's cemetery on the outskirts. It was also used as a house of prayer for the Lutheran and later the Catholic community. Today the church is no longer used as such, but is a multi-generational house of the diakonia.

Kirchheimbolanden Castle

  • 7  Kirchheimbolanden Castle, Schlossplatz 3. Kirchheimbolanden Castle in the Wikipedia encyclopediaKirchheimbolanden Castle in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryKirchheimbolanden Castle (Q2241858) in the Wikidata database. The Kirchheimbolanden Castle was built in the years 1738-1740 as the seat of the princes of Nassau-Weilburg and gave the town the nickname "Small Residence". In this function, however, it only served for 50 years, as southwest Germany and Kirchheimbolanden were occupied by the French in the course of the Napoleonic crusades. They had the castle sold to a private individual who had the left wing and the central part of the castle torn down. The remaining right wing fell victim to a fire in 1861 and was rebuilt in a simplified form. The castle has served as a retirement home since 2003 and can therefore not be viewed from the inside.
  • 8  Orangery, Dr.-Edeltraud-Sießl-Allee 4. The former orangery of the castle is a very striking building due to its size and towers high above the Herrengarten. The building was extensively restored in 2016 and has been used for gastronomic purposes ever since; this means that the building can also be viewed from the inside.
  • 9  Ballhaus, Neumayerstrasse 16-20. The former ballroom is located above the castle. It is now used for residential purposes and can therefore not be viewed from the inside.
  • 10  Castle garden. The palace garden east of the palace was created in its current form in 1889 under the direction of Heinrich Siesmayer, who was also responsible for the Frankfurt Palm Garden. The extensive area contains many trees, some of which are rare, from all over the world. There is also an open-air stage in the palace garden, where occasional events take place.

Towers

  • 11  Red Tower. One of the two preserved watchtowers of the medieval city fortifications. This tower was supposed to be demolished because it was in the way of car traffic, but the city council decided with a majority of one vote to keep the tower.
  • 12  Gray tower. The other of the two surviving watchtowers. The Dr. Friedrich Glaser facility was laid out at its foot, a small flowerbed that invites you to relax.
  • 13  Apothecary Tower. This is the former dungeon from medieval times. The name comes from a former pharmacy that was nearby for a long time.
  • 14  Suburban tower. The suburban tower dates back to the Middle Ages and guarded the entrance to the medieval town center. Only later did he get the baroque dome with clock and bell.
  • 15  Townhouse tower. The town house tower stands at the northern entrance to the town and has a similar baroque dome as its counterpart on the other side, only without a clock and bell.
  • 16  Watch tower. The watch tower is located on the Schillerhain (see below), but is older than this. It probably dates from the Middle Ages and supplemented the city fortifications in the valley with a wide view of the surroundings. It is still accessible today.

Buildings

  • 17  former District Court of Kirchheimbolanden, Neumayerstraße 7. The building of the former Kirchheimbolanden district court from 1881 forms the end of the steeply uphill district road from the old town. Today, the Kirchheimbolanden branch of the Worms tax office is located here, expanded to the rear with a modern extension.
  • 18  old trainstation, Bahnhofstrasse 1. At the old station, only the embankment reminds you that trains used to run here. The tracks have been completely removed and a parking lot has been built over them; the station building itself is now used for gastronomic purposes. The neighboring goods shed (Bahnhofstrasse 3) has also been preserved; there is a clothing store here.
  • 19  former post office, Bahnhofstrasse 7. The monumental post office building was not built until after World War I in 1925. Although there has been no post office here for a long time, there is still a mailbox in front of the building (even with a Sunday emptying) and a telephone booth.
  • 20  Royal Bavarian District Office, Bahnhofstrasse 17. This former administrative seat dates from 1874. Today there is a dormitory for mentally handicapped people here.

Parks

You will be rewarded with a view of the Rhine plain and, in good weather, as far as the foothills of the Odenwald and Kraichgau. To enjoy this view, you can either climb the 51 steps of the waiting tower (see above) or, if you don't have the strength to do so, climb the neighboring snail tower.
  • 22  graveyard, On Staffelstein 2. The cemetery is located on the eastern outskirts on Freiheitsstrasse. Particularly worth seeing are the Freischärler monument in memory of the rebels who fell in the fight against the Prussian troops in 1849, as well as numerous very old and beautiful graves from the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • 23  Jewish Cemetery. The Jewish cemetery is located in the Judental, a wooded area west of the city. The cemetery is worth a visit just because of the unique environment, which gives it an almost mystical flair - but sturdy shoes are essential, the paths are muddy.
