Scharbeutz is the southernmost municipality in the Bay of Lübeck. The Bay of Lübeck itself extends over 21 kilometers of beaches, of which a good 10 km belongs to Scharbeutz Beach and its maritime district Haffkrug. The community Scharbeutz was formed in 1974 from the former communities Haffkrug-Scharbeutz and Gleschendorf and today comprises 10 localities: Gleschendorf, Gronenberg, Haffkrug, Klingberg, Pönitz, Sarkwitz, Scharbeutz, Schürsdorf, Schulendorf, Wulfsdorf. Scharbeutz and Haffkrug are so-called sea spa baths, while the districts of Gronenberg, Klingberg and Pönitz am See are recognized as the Pönitz lake district. The community of Scharbeutz protrudes about 10 km inland and also offers some recreational opportunities there.

The gently sloping, about 6 km long, fine sandy beaches are an ideal paradise for children and families for swimming, digging and sunbathing. There are also a number of fun zones for young and old, such as dune and park golf, beach volleyball, cycling and skating - including the sea view, of course. The multifunctional promenade along the coast is both a footpath and a bike path. Inline skating is also allowed here.
