Vulkaneifel - Vulkaneifel

Sunrise over the Vulkaneifel

The Vulkaneifel is the part of Eifelwhose landscape is shaped by volcanoes. These can occur in the form of basalt cones, but also in the form of so-called maars.

Regions

  • The Vulkaneifel is naturally divided into the three sub-regions of the Volcanic Eastern Eifel (Verbandsgemeinden Brohltal, Pellenz, Mendig and Vordereifel), the Volcanic High Eifel (Verbandsgemeinden Adenau, Ulmen and district Nohn) and Vulkanische Westeifel (remaining part of the Verbandsgemeinde, Gerolere Obere and Kandsbergeifel) Manderscheid and Daun).

background

The younger Quaternary volcanoes are located south of Daun, the older, Tertiary and higher volcanoes north of it and also west of Gerolstein. For about 10,000 years there has been calm in the Eifel when it comes to volcanism. Is it the calm before the storm? We do not know it.
