background
Lörrach is mentioned for the first time as "Lorracho" in a document from the year 1102, in which Bishop Burkhard von Basel appointed Dietrich von Rötteln as guardian of the possessions of the St. Alban monastery on the right bank of the Rhine.
In 1403 King Ruprecht of the Palatinate awarded at the request of Margrave Rudolf III. von Hachberg-Sausenburg Lörrach the market rights, the Emperor Friedrich III. 1452 confirmed.
In 1678, Rötteln Castle was destroyed by French troops and four years later, in 1682, Margrave Friedrich Magnus von Baden-Durlach granted the city town charter.
During the Revolution of 1848/49, also called the "Baden Revolution", Gustav Struve proclaimed the "German Republic" on the balcony of the Loerrach town hall.
In 1863, one year after the opening of the Wiesentalbahn, Lörrach became the capital of the district and, as part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg, in 1973, it became the official city of the enlarged district of Lörrach.
The districts belong to Lörrach Stetten (since 1908), Tumringen and Tüllingen (both since 1935). Since 1975 also belong Haagen, Brombach and Hauingen as districts of Lörrach.
