Rheinfelden (Baden) is a city in Baden-Wuerttemberg. It is east of Basel at the Upper Rhine and is a large county seat.

background

Before 1800, the area of today's core town belonged to Rheinfelden, then Upper Austria, but was not built on and was characterized purely by agriculture.

In 1805 the Rhine became the border between the state of Baden and Switzerland. The area on the right bank of the Rhine was assigned to the Baden communities of Karsau, Nollingen and Warmbach.

The railway line between Basel and Constance was opened in 1856, and the so-called station near Rheinfelden went into operation not far from the border.

Between 1894 and 1898, Europe's first river power plant was built on the Baden side. In the course of the power plant construction, large Swiss industries (such as silk weaving, chemical works and aluminum works) settled near the train station in the 1890s.

From around 1900 the settlement built for the industrial workers was expanded. From then on, Nollingen and the new settlement formed the dual community of Nollingen - Badisch-Rheinfelden.

In 1921 the neighboring community of Warmbach was incorporated into the dual community of Nollingen - Badisch-Rheinfelden at its own request.

On October 17, 1922, the dual community Nollingen - Badisch-Rheinfelden received city rights. Since there was the highest number of inhabitants in the district of Badisch-Rheinfelden, it was decided to use the name Rheinfelden with the official name affix (Baden).

Between 1972 and 1975 Rheinfelden (Baden) reached more than 20,000 inhabitants through the incorporation of the smaller neighboring communities, whereupon the city administration submitted the application for a major district town.

With effect from January 1, 1975, this application was approved by the state government of Baden-Württemberg.

Neighboring municipalities of the city of Rheinfelden in Baden are: Grenzach-Wyhlen, Inzlingen, Loerrach, Stones, Maulburg, Schopfheim, Schwörstadt, Weir and Rheinfelden AG (Canton Aargau / Switzerland).
