background

Already in the 2nd year. AD, today's Schopfheim was a Roman settlement, as has been proven by finds in four different places. Around 650 AD there was an Alemannic settlement in the city area.

The first documentary mention is in the year 807 AD, when the farmer Himini and his sons donated their property in "Villa Scofheim" to the monastery of St. Gallen.
Around 1250, the village of Schopfheim was granted town charter by Konrad I von Rötteln, which allowed the place to grow rapidly in the following years. Gradually it developed into a stately administrative center for the rural area.
The severe earthquake in Basel in 1356 also caused some damage in Schopfheim, but the severe city fire in 1412, in which the city palace and nave were destroyed, was even more serious.

In 1473 the city received the salt monopoly and in 1529 its own city seal. With the Reformation in 1556, Schopfheim became Protestant.

After the end of the Thirty Years' War and three waves of plague, the city was almost depopulated, as only 72 inhabitants had survived. From 1752 an early industrialization set in, which settled new businesses in the city and brought the population to work.

In the 19th century, Schopfheim gradually developed into an industrial location. New factories were built and the place expanded. In 1848 Friedrich Hecker moved with his irregulars to Schopfheim and gave a speech here.
In 1862 Schopfheim was given a railway connection, which highlighted the increasing importance of the place as a business location.

After World War II, Schopfheim was occupied by French troops until 1952. After that, the city increasingly developed into a central location for the rural environment. With the administrative reform from 1971 to 1975, the previously independent communities of Eichen, Enkenstein, Fahrnau, Gersbach, Kürnberg, Langenau, Raitbach and Wiechs were incorporated and the urban area expanded to its present size.
