Grenzach-Wyhlen is a municipality in the district Loerrach and, as the name suggests, lies on a border - the Swiss border, which, however, cannot be historically proven as the origin of the name.

background

Since the place name of the Grenzach district is derived from the Roman personal name Carantius, it can be assumed that one of the owners of the Grenzach Roman villa bore this name. The name of the suburb Wyhlen (ze wilon, near the homesteads) goes back to the Alemannic settlement. The municipality is the southernmost in all of Baden-Württemberg and also the most distant German city from Berlin.

Grenzach-Wyhlen has had a partnership with the Italian since 1990 Pietrasanta.

Practical advice

As in every border area, it can happen that mobile phones dial into Swiss networks. This can lead to more expensive charges for phone calls, SMS sending and internet use. Our tip: Pay attention to the provider lettering on the screen from time to time.

For the Swiss, on the other hand, this can be an advantage if they do not have to make calls in the roaming network.
