On the mountain is a city in the Upper Palatinate in the North Bavaria. It is located on the river Vils.

background

Spared from air raids in World War II, the old town has retained the flair of a prosperous medieval trading town. Iron ore mining made the city rich. It is not without good reason that Amberg is called the Ruhr area of the Middle Ages. At that time, numerous ore veins were found in the area around Amberg and intensively exploited. The last mine did not close until the 1980s. Smelted in hammer mills on the rivers Vils and Naab, the iron was then brought to Regensburg on Vils and Naab by flat barges (so-called plattens). Such a square can be admired in Amberg on the “Stadtbrille”, a two-arched bridge - the symbol of the city.

In Regensburg the boatmen exchanged the iron for the valuable salt from Austria, which was then shipped back to Amberg. In this way Amberg was able to achieve great prosperity. The old town of Amberg still reflects the flair of that time very well. Today Amberg is only economically significant for the surrounding area.

For a long time Amberg was the capital of the "Upper Palatinate" and belonged to the electoral Rhine Palatinate Heidelberg. An electoral palace in Amberg still bears witness to this. The legendary Winter King Friedrich I was born here, who contributed to the Thirty Years' War. It was only Maximilian I, King of Bavaria, who moved the seat of government of the Upper Palatinate to Regensburg.
