Monuments

  • Schwann memorial in front of the former main post office, created in 1909 by Josef Hammerschmidt, bronze and granite. Theoder Schwann, born in Neuss, inventor of cell theory and professor in Löwen.
  • Neuss tower, Created in 1985 by Haus-Rucker-Co. A formerly accessible steel installation in public space, Theodor-Heuss-Platz.
Description: An upright cube of steel skeleton, which is filled in with wooden planks, extends over a square floor plan. The four views are the same and each have four windows and two door openings through which you can see a brass cylinder tapering upwards. This golden sleeve extends over the entire height of the interior. The openings in the wooden outer shell corresponded to openings of the same size in the cylinder.
The “Neuss Tower”, which is popularly known as the “Hans-Heinrich-Grosse-Brockhoff-Turm” after its initiator, has never received any appreciable acceptance. A number of discussions called for its conversion (e.g. to a "Rhenish windmill") or demolition.
So far, both of these have passed the installation by, instead it was decided to allow them to slowly decay.
In the spring of 2013 bars were installed on all windows and door openings to prevent pigeons from entering. They had caused increasing pollution in the past.
House Rucker Co. was an Austrian group of architects and artists that existed from 1967 to 1992 at the latest. Her work is located in the border area between architecture and sculpture, mostly with the aim of influencing it and its users by means of an installation in public space. Under the title "Mind-Expanding-Program", these interventions were realizations of utopian architectural concepts, which are committed to the expansion of consciousness. Influenced by Pop Art and Fluxus, unused visual possibilities should be made tangible by shifting familiar perception patterns, thus evoking a discourse about perception and public space.
Hau-Rucker-Co gained international attention through a total of three documenta participations, documenta 5-1972, documenta 6-1977, documenta 8-1987.
Her contribution "Frame Building" on the occasion of documenta 6 is certainly one of her best-known works and is part of the circle of permanently installed documenta works.

shop

The same name is located in the Rheinparkcenter in Neuss 1 Rheinparkcenter (Shopping center, which was called HUMA Park until February 2010) which has had around 140 shops since 2011. There are branches of all well-known brands, as well as shops that are even less well-known in Germany.

In the city center of Neuss there are, among other things, many cafes, bakeries, textile shops, as well as various service providers (insurance companies, banks, doctors, hairdressers, etc.). The larger department stores include one 2 Kaufhof branch and a 3 C&A branch in the city center as well 4 Tk Maxx.

That’s the first glance. Düsseldorf city center can be reached in about 30 minutes by public transport.

The entire pedestrian zone of Neuss city center has a white floor. The tram now runs on a single track through the city so that pedestrians have more space. Furthermore, the old tram stops have been replaced by modern and space-saving stops. Because the tram can run in both directions at 10-minute intervals despite the single-track route, it often creates a certain fascination for technically targeted people.

It is all the more worthwhile to discover some small, owner-managed retail treasures. 5 Engels spice mill, Book 8 (and the 6 Parent company on Hymgasse 21), 7 Ullrich cigars, Radtka library, wooden toy shop on Quirinus Münster, Italian Schuhbotique, Neustraße, 8 Antiques Rieder, 9 Jacques wine depot, 10 NATO shop ...

Furthermore, useful branches are to be mentioned, 11 Barrique Neuss, opposite the Stadtsparkasse Zentrale, 12 HEMA (largest branch in Germany), the offshoot of the original Dutch department store, 13 Mayersche bookstore, 14 HM, 15 Gutenberg bookstore, Etc.

Clearly the best day to track down the flair of downtown Neuss is Saturday morning. After a visit to the Neusser Markt at the Quirinus Münster, it goes to the café sipping on the market. On such a day you always meet more Lückscher than agreed.

security

In general, Neuss is no less safe than other cities. However, there are some parts of the city that should not be visited on foot when it is dark (e.g. Erftal, Derikum, Weckhoven, Weissenberg or the Barbaraviertel). The Lukasviertel is considered to be very safe, as many wealthy people live here and the Neuss police station is nearby. The main street in Neuss city center as well as the market and the forecourt of the Quirinus Minster are also safe.

In the city center, there are often violent attacks in the area of the main train station and the bus route (stops at Zolltor, Neustraße, Niedertor).

health

There are various fitness studios in the individual Neuss districts.
