catfish is the second largest city in Upper Austria, about 30 km southwest of Linz and has about 59,000 inhabitants. The old town is very worth seeing.

background

The city, then called Ovilava, was already one of the most important in Austria during the Roman Empire. In 776 the city is mentioned as "castrum Uueles".

By plane

The airport Linz (LNZ / LOWL) is only about 15 km away, but Wels Airport (LOLW) with 1390 m of asphalt runway is also available for general aviation.

By train

Wels is an important railway junction on the route Salzburg - Vienna and stopping point for almost all international trains.

By bus

Several city bus routes make every point in the city relatively quick to reach.

NO bus service on Sundays, but it is possible to call an "AST" taxi by phone.

Wels has one of the most beautiful city squares in Austria.

Parks

  • 13 , a wonderful garden in the heart of Wels which was laid out in 1941. It can be found in the passage from Freiung 15 to Stadtplatz 46.
  • Pollheimer Park. Although the design was designed as a place to rest and reflect, the park cannot really live up to this claim, even after the redesign, due to its location on the heavily frequented Pollheimerstraße and the associated high levels of exhaust and noise emissions.
  • Wimpassing leisure center. The Wimpassing leisure facility is located in the west of the city of Wels. It was built in 1985 and has a size of approx. 130,000 m². In addition to games for toddlers, children and young people, it offers many other attractions.

Practical advice

Many one-way lanes, traffic jams and a lack of parking spaces are also notorious in Wels, especially in the city center. It is better to leave the car in the garage. Most of the sights are within walking distance of each other and the public transport network is well-connected.

trips

Recommended excursion destinations are: Kremsmünster, Linz, Steyr, but also the region Salzkammergut-Ausseerland.

There are also still very close to Wels Thalheim near Wels and Schleissheim. In Thalheim the Marienwarte to let your gaze wander over Wels and, if the visibility is good, into the Mühlviertel. In Schleissheim you can visit the parish church Schleissheim and the Schloss Dietach. There are also well-marked hiking trails in Schleißheim.
