Tourist Attractions

Town square
Bummerlhaus on the town square

Steyr's old town with the town square and the Gothic parish church is well worth seeing. The most famous buildings on the town square are the Gothic Bummerlhaus (Steyr's landmark), the Rococo town hall with tower and the Marienkirche. The vantage point at the Tabor Tower offers a particularly beautiful view of the old town. Coming from the town square, the route leads over the Steyrbrücke at Zwischenbrücken and the Taborstiege next to the Michaelerkirche. There are two interesting cemeteries in the vicinity of the Tabor Tower: The Tabor cemetery, which in its oldest part is a renaissance plant from 1584 and the Municipal urn cemetery at Tabor with an expressionist-style crematorium (opened in 1927).

The confluence of the Steyr River into the Enns in intermediate bridges makes Steyr a two-river city. The city also includes this in its official logo.

There are remarkable holdings of houses from the Gothic to the Baroque not only in the inner city (old town), but also in the districts of Steyrdorf and Ennsdorf (Haratzmüllerstraße).

Pilgrimage church Christkindl
Marienkirche
  • 1  City parish church, Brucknerplatz. The Gothic parish church is the most important church building in the city. The first master builder was Hans Puchspaum, who is best known for his work on St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Around the church there are still many epitaphs from an earlier, now abandoned cemetery. In the three-aisled interior of the church, numerous stained glass windows with motifs from the 14th to the 19th century are particularly worth mentioning (including: w: Laxenburg window, Renaissance window, neo-Gothic Lamberg window). In the choir there is a gothic net rib vault, followed by a baroque lancet vault, the church pews are from 1655. The pulpit, high altar, side altars and pillar statues date from the period of regotization. The formerly baroque tower spire burned in 1876. Today's neo-Gothic tower is from 1889. Outside of worship times, the church can be entered via a side entrance on the south side. However, the church is often locked. w: Steyr parish church.

Next to the church are the older Margaret Chapel, the Gothic turret of which also goes back to Hans Puchspaum, the rectory and the sacristan's house.

  • 2  Michaelerkirche, Michaelerplatz, Steyrdorf district. Baroque church.
  • 3  Christkindl Church, Christkindlweg 69, Steyr. The baroque Christkindl Church is located just outside in the Christkindl district. A short trip to the nearby pilgrimage church is not only worthwhile at Christmas time. Either by bike, your own car or on foot, the two kilometers from the city center can be covered. It is worth taking a detour to the Christkindelwirt. During Advent, a special post office is set up here where there is the coveted postmark of the Christ Child. w: Christkindl pilgrimage church.
  • 4  Marienkirche, Stadtplatz 41, Steyr. The Church of St. Mary can be visited outside of the services of the Jesuit order. The church, which was built in the 15th century, was given its current baroque exterior in 1642. The interior rococo furnishings come from the 18th century. Located directly on the town square, the church is hard to miss. w: Marienkirche_ (Steyr).

security

Not only does the visitor have nothing to fear from the feeling. According to crime statistics, Steyer has been the safest place in Upper Austria since 2009. [1] However, should something happen, the local police station is located directly on the town square. Melting snow or rain often cause flooding at the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers. Although this is a huge obstacle to traffic, it is seldom a danger for visitors.
