Map of Mondsee

On and in the Mondsee, rich Neolithic finds of pottery and tools made of stone and bones were made in various places. They were ascribed to a separate pile-dwelling epoch that bears the name of the lake, the Mondsee culture, which existed between 2800 - 1800 BC. Is dated.

Even at the time of the Roman Empire there was a Roman settlement on the lake, which was connected to Juvavum (today's Salzburg) by a road.

The Bavarians, as an Allanic tribe, began to settle the lakeshore around 600 AD. In the year 748 the Monastery Mondsee was founded by the Baierduke Odilo, of the Agilfinger family. It was the first monastery in Upper Austria. As a result, the monastery strongly shaped the development around the lake. For a long time the area around the lake belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria, it was not until 1506 that it became the property of the Habsburgs. The monastery itself was closed in 1791.

The age of tourism began in Mondsee in 1867, as it was in that year that tourism began to be promoted in Mondsee. With the first steamboat trip on the Mondsee in 1872, tourism got an additional boost. In 1891 the municipality was connected to the Austrian rail network with the Salzkammergut local railway.
