Mestre is a district of Venice on the mainland in ItalianVeneto. The district is important for tourism as it is connected to the main island of historic Venice around the Grand Canal by a five-kilometer rail and road bridge. Since the island can be reached by all means of transport within a few minutes, Mestre has developed its own tourist infrastructure and, in particular, has blossomed into an inexpensive overnight accommodation option.

background

Mestre is home to most of the residents of the city of Venice. While around 80,000 people live in Venice, there are around 200,000 here. The then independent municipality of Mestre received city rights in 1923, but was incorporated into Venice in 1926. The old town and the shops of Mestre can be easily reached on foot from the train station and are located around the 1 Piazza XXVII Ottobre (which is also called Piazza Barche, as it was once the landing stage for steam boats to Venice) and around the 2 Scattered around Piazza Ferretto with its characteristic clock tower, the latter being the only remnant of the medieval fortress that once surrounded the city, there are plenty of shops and boutiques of all kinds, including a market, bars and restaurants, cinemas and pizzerias.Mestre is a good rest from Venice.
